THE GOODS ON GIVING
Since its founding in 2016, Cowbell Brewing Co. has made Ontario’s four children’s hospitals a priority. For every single can of its craft beer sold, five cents is donated to each hospital to help with special projects, including the much-needed outdoor therapeutic play area at McMaster Children’s Hospital that was recently completed. For the tree hugger Trinity Oaks’s One Bottle One Tree campaign is as straightforward as it gets: for every bottle of wine sold, the California winery will plant a tree. In partnership with environmental organization Trees for the Future, the campaign has planted almost 23.5 million trees in developing countries since 2008. Did you know? The environmental practice of integrating trees into agriculture and landscapes to reduce soil erosion and to increase biodiversity is called agroforestry. Trinity Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon LCBO 15761, $17.95 Trinity Oaks Chardonnay LCBO 15762, $17.95 Shop the Issue at lcbo.com/ fdholiday20
Did you know? With its long-standing commitment to employee inclusivity, Barefoot was named to the Human Rights Campaign’s Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality list in 2017. Barefoot Cellars Pink Pinot Grigio LCBO 639971, $9.95 Barefoot Moscato LCBO 234351, $10.95 There may not have been any Pride parades this year due to COVID-19, but if they hadn’t been cancelled, Barefoot wines would have been an important part of the celebrations. After all, since 1988 Barefoot has supported thousands of local LGBTQA2+ charities and community events. Specifi- cally, in Toronto, Barefoot was the official wine sponsor of North America’s first World Pride Day in 2013. In addition to providing financial support, the Barefoot team also marched in the parade and waved a giant flag covered in a rainbow of painted footprints, ultimately winning the award for Best Marching Contingent. With an illustration of an imposing African bush elephant on the label of every bottle of Amarula Cream, it comes as no surprise to learn that the South African liqueur company’s mission is to pro- tect the world’s largest extant land mammal from extinction. Since 2002, the Amarula Trust has in- vested in educational and environmental initiatives to ensure the vulnerable African bush elephant’s population continues to grow. Did you know? When the marula—the plum-sized fruit that gives Amarula its sweet and complex flavour—ripens, the heady scent can attract elephants from miles away. Amarula Cream LCBO 342246, $28.95
