Beer & cider Ireland’s traditional beer styles, the dry stout and the red ale, are known and loved the world over; and Ireland has a cider-making history dating back thousands of years. Per- fect for a casual gathering, or sharing over party snacks, these choices won’t disappoint.
Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale LCBO 442731, 4 pk, $11.65
A small portion of roasted barley malt in the brew gives this traditional red ale a touch of toasty bitterness, a fine foil for the beer’s toffee-like sweetness.
Guinness Draught Stout LCBO 270447, 500 mL, $3.25
Hailing from the iconic St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin, the world’s most pop- ular pint of black is a steadfast choice for St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Magners Original Irish Cider LCBO 699389, 500 mL, $3.45 Full of yellow apple notes and bright car- bonation, this medium sweet cider pairs well with Irish cheddar.
Something old, something new A contemporary lager from the old guard, and a traditional dry stout from a newer Irish brewery. Guinness Hop House 13 Lager ( LCBO 536227, 500 mL, $2.95) is brewed using the Guinness yeast strain and Irish barley. A modern lager boasting bread-crust and stone fruit aromas, and a distinct citrusy hop finish. O’Hara’s Nitro Irish Stout ( LCBO 20013, 440 mL, $2.95) was first brewed in 1999. This Irish stout has a robust, roasted coffee-like aroma and a vel- vety mouth feel. Fuggle hops lend an earthy, leafy character to the lingering finish.
