RUSTIC FEAST

BY CHRISTOPHER ST. ONGE • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB FIOCCA

FRESH LOCAL INGREDIENTS OFFER THE RIPE, DELECTABLE TASTES OF THE SEASON IN THIS CASUAL MENU THAT FEEDS A CROWD.

THE EVENING CHILL can make eating outdoors in autumn a challenge, but we’re not ready to hibernate just yet. An old wooden barn, time-worn and loved, seems tailor-made for a dinner. Luckily Ontario’s landscape is dotted with these atmospheric beauties.    With a little planning and a memorable menu of both comforting and new dishes, this fall feast is sure to please. Begin with a bounty of our best local charcuterie, a trouble-free

start if ever there was one, while you finish things up in the kitchen. The centrepiece, a cracking-good porchetta roast, will no doubt call everyone to the table long before it gets there with its knockout perfume of spice and garlic. To finish, linger over gooey, decadent bars of chocolate, dulce de leche and short- bread with just a hint of coffee. It’s best to make hay while you can and enjoy the waning hours of autumn’s golden light.
