SEASONAL FLAVOURS

Falling for beer Gotta love those fall flavours—pumpkin spice, anyone? Happily, brewers agree, adding flavours to beer to great effect. Here’s what we’re falling for this season.

Wet-Hopped Ales In late August, Ontario’s hopyards are filled with brewery teams hand-picking their lot of fresh hop flowers for their wet-hopped ale. Once picked, these fresh (or wet) hops are driven straight back to the brewery and plucked into a boiling brew kettle, giving these beers vibrant herbaceous and citrusy hop aromas.

Ontario Hop Farms Thanks to demand from craft breweries for local ingredients, Ontario’s nearly- extinct hop farms are rising again. Today there are more than 90 hop yards in the province—up by 60 percent in just three years. Check the Ontario Hop Grower’s Association website for one in your region and see if you can book a visit.
