THERE ARE 30,000 hectares of grape vines in Bourgogne – finding your way around can be a challenge. Luckily, the entire region has been studied and cherished since Cistercian and Cluniac monks began their meticulous classifications more than 1,000 years ago. Today’s growers are the guardians of Bourgogne’s 84 distinct appellations (AOCs), each reflecting a recognisably different terroir or “taste of a place.” From truly exceptional sites come Grand Cru wines that are among the most prestigious in the world – the ultimate expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But Bourgogne offers so much more, with delightful quality for every occasion and at price points that won’t break the bank. “An excellent place to begin your exploration is with the 13 Bourgogne and 27 Mâcon wines that add another Delaunay, vice-president of the Bourgogne Wine Board. “They’re the first step towards the notion of terroir.” These wines will carry you from a casual meal among friends to a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving party! Bourgogne Côte d’Or Pinot Noir, 2020, Maison Marchand-Tawse (VINTAGES 285601, $32.25), has the refined oak and ripe black fruit flavours to flatter the turkey. A white can be equally successful: Mâcon-Lugny, Saint-Pierre, 2022, Cave de Lugny (VINTAGES 33666, $24.95) shows true finesse behind its beguiling lime blossom aromas. Bourgogne’s 44 Village AOCs zero in more tightly on local terroirs. “Each one has its own distinct personality,” says Laurent Delaunay, “just like human beings.” Montagny, for example, is a little-known gem – fresh, elegant and affordable. Try Montagny, 2019, Buissonnier by Cave des Vignerons de Buxy (VINTAGES 382879, $24.95) , a delightfully versatile Chardonnay with a spicy finish. geographical denomination to the Régionale AOCs,” explains Laurent
