Japanese kissaten (tea-­ drinking shops) boomed in the 1950s, showcasing the pricey turntables and imported vinyl records few individuals could afford—the cost of listening was as little as a cup of tea or coffee. In recent years, the concept has inspired a genera tion of “listening bars” around the world, serv ing high-fidelity sound, often accompanied by vintage vinyl, impeccable cocktails, snacks and a chill, hushed atmosphere.
