LCBO Food & Drink Early Summer 2020

White wine is perfectly capable of accompanying life’s more contemplative moments. Pick one with enough complexity or some- thing unusual to say and you’ll find it can be the ideal conversation starter—a wine to enjoy slowly, on its own or with a sweet or savoury pastry or simply some fruit. And now for something completely different

Willm Gewurztraminer Reserve Alsace LCBO 269852, $17.95

The Audacity of Thomas G. Bright Chardonnay VQA LCBO 11565, $16.95

Laroche Viognier la Chevaliere LCBO 377622, $12.95 What a bargain—a Pays d’Oc Viognier with a smooth medium body and loads of apricot and gingerbread aromatics.

Luscious Alsatian off-dry Gewurz’ is silky smooth and laden with aro- matic rose petal and lychee notes.

Blending unfermented grape juice adds extra richness to the wine’s baked apple, oaky vanilla nuances.

An Alsatian sensation

People pair Gewürztraminer with all sorts of spicy Asian food but it’s much better suited to subtler dishes. Its particular aromatics go really well with ginger, ripe cheeses and smoked fish. We found a recipe in the archives that could have been made for our bottle of Willm.

Smoked Salmon and Brie Quiche This recipe from the Winter 2006 issue is a stellar match for Gewürztraminer. Using a ripe brie with lots of flavour—such as Brie de Meaux—will only enhance things further. Find the recipe at lcbo.com/fdearlysummer20.
