New Year’s Sparklers

Ring in 2018 with class by pop- ping the cork on a magnum of sparkling ale. The stunning Deus Brut des Flanders ( LCBO 613367, 750 mL, $19.95) is brewed in Bel- gium and then sent to France’s Champagne region for riddling. It’s a crisp, dry stunner with notes of sourdough. Or toast with a bottle of Goose Island Sofie ( LCBO 331298, 765 mL, $10.15), a hazy golden saison that has notes of pome fruit, white pep- percorn and zippy acidity. Stay local with Beau’s New Lang Syne ( LCBO 448621, 750 mL, $16.00) a Pinot Gris-barrel-aged tripel packing a tropical fruit punch. F

BARREL AGED Bourbon and beer lovers alike will fall hard for Kentucky Bastard ( LCBO 543389, 500 mL, $14.95) a rich, full-bodied brew from Nickel Brook Brewing. Aged in bourbon barrels for a year, this beer is the perfect marriage of the to ee and vanilla notes of bourbon with the roasted and chocolate flavours of an imperial stout.

Resolu on Beer After the holiday’s indulgences it’s probably time to think about health goals again. The average lager is about 150 calories and 6 grams of carbs. Moosehead’s Cracked Canoe ( LCBO 478255, 473 mL, $2.65) has more body and grainy goodness than the average light beers, and it’s only 3.5 percent ABV, 125 calories and low in carbs. Plus you can express your Canadian pride with this beer—the family-owned outfit celebrates its 150th birthday this year, making it as old as our nation. It was started in Dartmouth, N.S., by Susannah Oland, a mother of nine children and a talented brewer who launched the brewery to support her family.
