LCBO Food & Drink Spring 2017

SWIZZLE STICK Swizzle sticks bring to mind colourful plastic stirrers found in cocktails during the Nixon era. The original swizzle stick, however, comes from the Quararibea tur- binata , a tree native to the Caribbean, whose branches are trimmed to form this clever multi-pronged tool. Also known as le bois lélé , it’s used to churn crushed ice drinks like Juleps and, of course, Swizzles, the tall rum-based libations popular all over the West Indies. To swizzle a drink, place the pronged section in the bottom of the glass, and rotate the shaft back and forth between both palms. It’s the original hand-held blender.
