RETRO REFRESH
Meet the new Pink Squirrel, not the same as the old one, thanks to tweaks that include swapping in bittersweet aperitivo instead of sweet liqueur. APEROL SQUIRREL P. 107
Milking It One of the most deliciously kitschy cocktail trends of all time was the wave of creamy drinks that took over swank
cocktail lounges of the 1950s and ’60s. Inspired by the popularity of
soda fountains and ice-cream counters, bartenders made a new generation of dessert-leaning drinks that made adulting a lot more fun—and tasty. Crème de Noyaux, a red liqueur made from nuts that was popular in the 1950s, gave the Pink Squirrel its colour and name. Invented in New Orleans over a century ago, the Grasshopper is a mint chocolate treat that had comebacks in the 1950s, the ’80s and again today.
ESPRESSO GRASSHOPPER P. 107 What happens when you mix a Grasshopper with an Espresso Martini? Magic. The espresso balances out the sweetness of this iconic minty cream cocktail.
The Nick & Nora–style coupe (nicknamed for stylish The Thin Man characters from the 1930s and ’40s) is a perfect fit for creamy cocktails. Coupe Glasses, LCBO 46558, set of 2, $9.95
