DRINK BEER
OF PALE ALE SUMMER
BY TONIA WILSON-VUKSANOVIC PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES TSE
There is probably no other beer style in the world that has travelled more than IPA—India Pale Ale. Its roots are firmly planted in England, yet it has been replicated, enhanced, exaggerated and revered by countries all over the globe. All the more fitting that the style was born out of its need to travel, specifi- cally to the British colonies in India, but more on that later. Part of the reason the style has had worldwide success is on account of its refreshing, flavourful nature. The one common thread through all styles of IPA is that there is a noticeably elevated level of hopping, which can be attributed to either British or American hop varieties. The term “hop-forward” is used to describe beers of this nature, where the hop character is an easily detectable component of the beer. Hops can impart both aroma and bitter- ness, and it is this bitterness that makes the beer refreshing. So when plotting out your summertime beer roster, make sure to include some thirst-quenching IPAs. There are multitudes to choose from; from classic to crazy and everything in-between. You’re sure to find something to pair perfectly with the hazy days of summer.
