LCBO Food & Drink Summer 2017

yakitori PARTY

GET IN ON THE ACT, no matter how big your yard or balcony or neighborhood parkette. If you haven’t got room for a charcoal kettle or gas grill, chances are you’ve got somewhere to rest a tabletop grill. These have come a long way in recent years, exploding in popularity along with Korean grill-it-yourself restaurants. Choices range from the tried-and-true (think old-school hibachi) to cutting-edge (portable infrared!), hitting all price points along the way.     What we like most about these pint-sized grills is their place in the middle of the table, meaning you can share the work of grilling dinner with your friends. Don’t sweat the imposition—it’s so much fun, no one will be the wiser that they’re working for their supper.     Yakitori (little Japanese skewers of quick-cooking meats and vegetables lacquered with a salty sauce) make for an ideal DIY grilling party. Skewer everything ahead of time so guests don’t get their hands dirty, and let everyone go to town choosing their favourites. Serve a summery rice or tender Boston lettuce salad on the side, plop a bucket of iced beer on the table and let the good times roll.
