7 LA BANANE , TORONTO ▼
5 L I TTLE GROUSE ON THE PRA I R I E , SASKATOON ▼ You can go à la carte but the best way to enjoy Chef Jesse Zuber’s modern Italian is by dining alla famiglia. The menu changes weekly. Shared bowls and plates might include made-to-order tagliatelle with Saskatch- ewan chanterelles or crispy-skinned sea bass. And I’ve never had better risotto, anywhere. There’s also an excel- lent barrel-aged cocktail program by Christopher Cho.
The striking disco-meets- fin-de-siècle room is an in- stant classic rooted in the French classics, where Chef Brandon Olsen showcases an icy raw bar, Duck Breast with Charred Endive and Jus, Pommes Aligot and Eurobass en Croûte with yuzu beurre blanc. The namesake bana nas find their way into a just- baked Gâteau à la Banane for dessert.
8 STANLEY LOBSTER CO. LTD. , YARMOUTH , N . S . Overlooking the Bay of Fundy, this wholesale and retail lobster pound is the perfect spot for a sunset supper. With access to more than 500,000 pounds of live lobster during the six-month season, you can order whatever size you think you can muster, roll up your sleeves, let clarified butter dribble down your chin, and enjoy a steamed lobster that’s as fresh and sweet as this summer’s night.
6 RAE & JERRY ’ S STEAK HOUSE , WI NN I PEG ▼
The vintage red leather chairs, red carpeting, red wallpaper, that iconic roadside sign—that’s just a start. Sidle up to the bar and let one of the old-timers fix you an old-timey cocktail. Open since the city’s powerhouse era of the 1950s, it’s still as popular as ever, and I love that dinner starts with a choice of tomato juice or soup, moves on to sirloins and finishes with coconut cream pie. You can eat like it’s yesteryear and like there’s no tomorrow. LA BANANE BY LAURA ROSSI PHOTOGRAPHY; RAE & JERRY’S BY REBECCA SCHROEDER, RED PHOTO CO.
