HIDDEN TREASURES
Athens Fried Cakes
For more than five decades, this family-run business has been making these dense nutmeg- scented old-fashioned cake doughnuts. Fried in lard until brown, they’re known for having a delicate crackly crust when consumed fresh and hot. Day-old and stored in plastic, they’re tender and moist. Whether made with whitefish, perch or pickerel (walleye), the shore lunch is a tradition that those travelling through Northern Ontario are privy to. Each chip shack or restaurant has its own rendition, from the lightly battered whitefish with thyme- seasoned fries at The Port in Little Current to the English-style beer-battered whitefish at Lake Huron Fish & Chips in Providence Bay. There’s the popular Friday Night Fish Fry at Voyageurs’ Lodge & Cookhouse in Batchawana Bay, while Sudbury and Killarney’s Herbert Fisheries is recognized for its lightly dusted version and crispy double-fried fries. Holding the title of the country’s best, award-winning Lord Elgin Fish & Chips in Port Elgin uses a secret batter recipe that’s been in the family for over half a century. Fish ’n’ Chips
Orangeade
Touted as having the drink that made Port Stanley famous, this family-owned-and- operated burger stand has been serving “good fast food” and Orangeade since 1911. Dotted with orange pulp, the signature sweet beverage also comes as a Creamsicle-like milkshake and is available fromMarch break until Labour Day.
