WHAT TO SERVE Whitewater Dawn Patrol Tangerine Blonde Ale LCBO 16830, 473 mL, $3.75 The sliders are full of flavour, so go for a summer- time session beer with its own personality— a mellow blonde ale with the scent of tangerine that works perfectly with the sweet-and-spicy pulled pork. CRUSHING ON ORANGE The vibrant Day-Glo orange colour of your favourite childhood soda gets a grown-up flavour profile in this slushie drink. Cans of San Pellegrino Blood Orange (LCBO 45535, 6 pk, $7.95) or bottled Panache Blood Orange Italian Soda both work well to bring the bubbles; substitute an orange- flavoured sparkling water for a less-sweet drink. For two drinks, in a blender jug, combine 2 oz Aperol (LCBO 176834, $33.50), 2 oz vanilla vodka (substitute: 2 oz vodka and 1/4 tsp/1 mL vanilla extract). Break three single-stick or two twin-stick orange ice pops (around 150 mL total) off their sticks and add, along with 2 cups (500 mL) ice. Blend on milkshake or smoothie setting until slushy. Divide between two serving glasses and top each with 2 oz blood orange–flavoured soda or sparkling water. Garnish with fresh or dehydrated orange wheels. To make a batch, for each serving combine 1 oz each of Aperol and vanilla vodka with 1 twin-stick orange ice pop (stick removed) and 1 cup (250 mL) ice, according to blender-jug capacity. Blend until slushy, top each drink with 2 oz blood orange soda or orange-flavoured spar kling water and garnish with orange wheels. Makes 2 drinks

DOCTORED PEPPER The inimitable flavours of the fruity, spicy pop born at a drugstore and named for a doctor have adult appeal as a cocktail— especially with a spicy garnish replacing a soda-fountain cherry! If you can’t find fresh, President’s Choice Black Label offers excellent preserved Hot Cherry Peppers: just rinse well and pat the oil off before using as a garnish. For one drink, combine 1 oz each amaretto and Fireball Cinnamon Whisky (LCBO 447953, $25.95) with 1/4 tsp (1 mL) grenadine in a serving glass. Fill halfway with ice, top with 6 oz cola (like Fever-Tree Distillers Cola, LCBO 41909, 6 pk, $7.95) and gently stir before garnishing with a cherry pepper.

CREAM SHANDY This fruity but bitter drink only looks like a cream soda, with its reddish colour and frothy top. Whether you call it a riff on the Negroni with beer in place of gin, or a Beer Americano, it’s undeniably delicious. Non-alcoholic beer can be substituted. For one drink, combine 11/2 oz each of sweet red vermouth and red bitter (such as Campari Aperitivo, LCBO 277954, $35.55, or Luxardo Aperitivo, LCBO 44612, $26.95) in a serving glass or mug full of ice. Using a milk frother, immersion blender or a cocktail shaker without ice, mix 2 oz lager (such as Peroni Nastro Azzurro, LCBO 143891, 500 mL, $3.95) until very frothy and pour foam and any unfrothed beer on top of cocktail. Garnish with fresh or frozen berries and stir stick or straw.

For a batch that serves 8, combine 1 cup (250 mL) each of amaretto and Fireball Cinnamon Whisky, 2 tsp (10 mL) grenadine and 4 cans (around 1.5 L) cola in a pitcher and stir gently.
