LCBO Food & Drink Travel 2025
Mexico City For many first-time visitors, the biggest surprise is how leafy things are in Mexico City (also known as CDMX, the local abbreviation for Ciudad de México). Every turn you make on this city’s tree-lined streets reveals a lovely new park, often surrounded by chic boutiques and a staggering number of smart bars and world-class restaurants.
DRINK LIKE A LOCAL There’s no shortage of tasty things to drink in this city, but tequila and Mexican beer are pretty ubiquitous. Cerveza (beer) is rarely served in a bottle in Mexico, thanks to creative bar tenders who’ve concocted an entire family of cheladas (beer cocktails) that range from the spicy, seafood-laden Michelada de Lagunilla to the trending Licuachela, a “sweet heat” mix ture made with a savoury pickled fruit sauce called chamoy and garnished with candies.
STREET EATS Mexico City’s street food is world-famous for good reason. Although tacos hog the spotlight, it’s also home to carts selling tasty regional classics, including decadent sandwiches, sweet churros (like doughnuts, but better) and elotes (grilled corn on the cob dressed with creamy and spicy sauces.)
TO DO
A TASTE OF MEXICO CITY
Dos Equis Lager LCBO 616540, 6 pk, $17.95 This pilsner-style beer is an
outlier because it’s slightly more complex and citrussy than many Mexican beers.
Modelo Especial LCBO 418590, 6 pk, $19.95
Light and clean-tasting, Modelo Especial rose to become one of the best-selling beers in North America partly because it works so well in beer cocktails.
Siempre Plata Tequila LCBO 19924, $65.95 A traditionally made, additive free tequila with an intense depth of flavour and bold citrus, pepper and cooked agave notes. Great for sipping or mixing.
HIKE THE FOREST The city’s biggest park, Chapultepec , is so big that it’s often called “the forest.” It’s not only remarkable for its size, but it’s also home to art galleries, a zoo, a castle and the truly awesome Museum of Anthropology , a sensational experience housed in an architectural marvel.
