LCBO Food & Drink Travel 2026
Hearty, quick to make and delicious, sandwiches are a comfort food with almost unlimited iterations. Try these recipes, inspired by our international favourites.
No matter which country you visit, there is almost always a signature sandwich to try. To enjoy some of these global icons without a passport, we’ve come up with five recipes to make at home. Starring pork simmered in a garlicky broth, Portuguese bifanas are a fun way to feed a crowd. Another crowd pleaser is Irish-style egg salad sandwiches, which are lightened with lettuce, tomatoes and green onions. If you’re a fan of herring, open-faced Swedish sillmacka put the briny fish on hearty rye with hard-boiled eggs and creamy dill sauce. Korean gilgeori toast is a quick, easy and affordable meal featuring a veg-heavy omelette, ketchup and melty cheese. Finally, we’ve taken some liberties with the great Canadian back bacon sandwich by adding tangy slaw and swapping out the kaiser for a soft bun.
