The interior of Sardinia is shaped by rugged mountain ranges, sweeping central massifs and dramatic limestone cli s along with extinct volcanic formations dating back to the Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. Sicily , in addition to inland mountain ranges and fertile plains, also boasts Europe’s largest active volcano. Mount Etna, standing 3,400 metres tall and covering nearly 1,200 square kilometres, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, particularly orchards and vineyards.
