Separated by thousands of kilometres between the Atlantic and the Pacific, Canada’s key wine regions are united in their quest for the best. Canada is famous for plenty of things: hockey, maple syrup, natural beauty, comedic actors; the list goes on. Increasingly, our wine is earning a place on that list, and there’s more reason to buy Canadian than ever. Here, we check out our wine scene from coast to coast in BC, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Boasting nearly 300 wineries, British Columbia is where mountainsides, oceans, lakes, and the only classified desert in Canada combine to create diverse climates in nine designated viticultural areas. The heart of BC’s wine scene is the Okanagan Valley : a lakeside region featuring the Osoyoos Desert and more net sunlight hours than Napa Valley. The Okanagan’s first winery opened in 1932, and over 200 wineries now thrive there. The region’s key grape varieties include Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

NOVA SCOTIA Riding the tide
Benjamin Bridge’s winery, nestled among the verdant hills of Gaspereau Valley.
BENJAMIN BRIDGE WILD ROCK WHITE 2024 6 Nova Scotia
Claiming bragging rights as Canada’s original wine region, Nova Scotia was first planted with wine grapes by French settler Louis Hébert way back in 1611. Its first commercial winery arrived in 1980, and today there are a total of 22 scattered across the province. It’s difficult to overstate the role the Atlantic Ocean plays in shaping Nova Scotian wines, especially considering that all its vineyards are situated within 20 kilometres of the coast. One of the coolest climates in all of Canada’s wine scene, Nova Scotia is particularly suited to producing sparkling wine. Its signature varieties include L’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Muscat and Maréchal Foch.
Founded in Gaspereau Valley in 1999, family-run Benjamin Bridge is certified by B Lab for positive social and environmental commitment. This delightfully perfumed wine is an eclectic blend of Ortega, l’Acadie Blanc, Chardonnay, Geisenheim, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. “We generate around $40,000 a year in charitable donations, from the local farmers’ market to state and national programs” says Elena Brooks, founder and winemaker at Australia’s Dandelion Vineyards. “All of our donations go to causes that are close to our hearts.” The organizations that Dandelion Vineyards help support include Our Village: a Victoria-based charity who collect baby’s and children’s items and donate them to families who need them. This rehoming also reduces waste by keeping quality essential items out of landfill. While hockey may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Australia, it means a lot to the folks at Ice Factor Program, who Dandelion Vineyards also support. Since 2005, this innovative initiative has helped at-risk students stay in school by giving them something to be a part of: an ice hockey team! Dandelion Vineyards also gives to Helping Hands in Bhutan, who are working to create a thriving hand rehabilitation program for the people of Bhutan. For over 10 years, Helping Hands in Bhutan has donated medical supplies, led teaching programs, provided patient surgery, and helped establish new hand therapy clinics. So while you won’t see all these good works listed on the label, rest assured that Dandelion’s generous wines grow from a generous spirit.

LOCAL TALENT ZOOM LENS Lake Erie North Shore (LENS) is Canada’s southernmost wine region. Compared to the 100 in nearby Niagara, its 17 wineries are small in number, but they’re turning out some of Ontario’s tastiest wines and putting this increasingly significant region firmly on the map.

LOCAL TALENT
Pelee Island, a place steeped in history. RIGHT: It’s a hands-on approach at Colchester Ridge.
In response to the volatile world in which we now find ourselves living, consumers are looking to support local enterprise, and this includes an increased interest in Ontario wines. For many, this has simply been an expansion of an already enthusiastic appreciation for the world-class wines we produce, while for others, the discovery of the range and quality of the characterful wines being made here has been a revelation. Even people who had never tried Ontario wine were osmotically aware of
Niagara’s wines, but the increased attention on all things local is shining a brighter light on all of Ontario’s regions, like the Lake Erie North Shore. Situated at the southernmost tip of Canada, LENS is almost entirely surrounded by water: Lake St. Clair to the northwest, the Detroit River to the west, and Lake Erie to the south. Lake Erie is shallow by comparison to the other Great Lakes and so warms and cools much faster, meaning that its influence in a given season can be more dynamic. During the long
growing season, the plentiful sunshine makes it possible to ripen grapes fully, encouraging big, bold, ripe flavour and making the area ideal for Bordeaux varieties, but also grapes such as Syrah and Tempranillo. Though LENS is the warmest of Ontario’s wine regions, the lake influence also allows it to produce dynamic white wines and zippy sparklers. The nine islands that comprise the Pelee Island municipality are collectively called the South Islands and were awarded subappellation status in July 2015.
