ONTARIO Lake effects

Home to 185 wineries and three designated viticultural areas, Ontario’s wine landscape is defined by the Great Lakes, along with limestone formations shaped by ancient seas and waterways. The topography is particularly striking in the Niagara Peninsula , with its Escarpment soaring above the southern tip of Lake Ontario. Niagara’s first commercial winery appeared in 1837, and today, 100 wineries operate in the region. Key grape varieties include Riesling, Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.
