The moderate climate and gravel-based soils of Hawke’s Bay make it an ideal location for Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot. This one has generous dark and brambly berry notes, dark cherry, plum, herbs, chocolate, and a touch of woodsmoke. Juicy and food-friendly, it’s perfect for mid-week dining. Made in a comparatively forward, easy-drinking style, this Pinot Noir comes from Bot River and two of the three Hemel-en-Aarde wards (Upper and Ridge). Featuring the 11, 116 and 777 Dijon clones, it’s sappy, racy and spicy, all redcurrant, wild strawberry and clove and some appealing underlying grip. Drink date: 2025-2029. Though this blending grape mostly planted in the Mediterranean doesn’t have a lofty worldwide reputation, its capacity for producing elegant varietal reds made it a darling among South Africans about a decade ago. This is a terrific example at a great price. Vibrant notes of cherry and raspberry are irresistible (go ahead and try), with wonderfully balanced acidity and light tannins. Excellent anytime but ideal with a light chill during summer. BADENHORST SECATEURS CHENIN BLANC ‚ WO Swartland

Secateurs is one of the South African wine industry’s best calling cards, a large volume Chenin Blanc that could only be produced in the Cape. Aged in foudres, it has a stony top note, deftly judged flavours of peach, pear and pink grapefruit, good palate weight and a bright, tangy finish. Hugely drinkable. 2025-28.
