BORGHINI BALDOVINETTI DE BACCI POGGIO ULIVETO VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO 2021 DOCG (San Fabiano) There is a beguiling vermouth-like nose, with dried cherry, star anise, potpourri and orange peel aromas. The attack is firm and chalky as expected from a Sangiovese, with a full body, velvety tannins and crisp if not zesty acidity. Impressive concen tration and very good ripeness not without tension, with cherry pits and spices in the finish. Drinkable now, but best in five to six years. PUGLIA PAPALE LINEA ORO PRIMITIVO DI MANDURIA 2021 DOP (Varvaglione)

This rich, broad Primitivo shows black cherry, cassis, dark raspberry, plum, chocolate, spice, tar and smoke. It’s an intense wine, but one that doesn’t overstep, showing good balance, structure and authenticity. Pair it with barbecued ribs, a mild chicken curry, or smoked tofu steaks. It will drink through 2029+.
