A RED WORTH KNOWING

Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s most awarded wine regions – and to some, one of the most mysterious. That ends now with our guide to the region and the rugged reds it produces.

In the highlands of Castilla y Léon in north-central Spain, the mighty River Duero (known as the Douro in Portugal) winds its way through a landscape of valleys and vineyards. This is Ribera del Duero, which is home to Spain’s most prestigious wine producer (Vega Sicilia) and plenty more besides. Like the more famous Rioja region, Ribera del Duero specializes in barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo; specifically, a local variant of the grape, which they call Tinto Fino. Some of Ribera’s red wines are made exclusively with Tinto Fino, while some (following a precedent established by Vega Sicilia over 130 years ago) are blended with other varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon.

VILLACRECES PRUNO 2022 DO Ribera del Duero, Spain, vegan As I’ve often heard and seen in this vintage, the result of the 2022 Pruno has been much better than expected after a torrid summer and an early harvest. The wine keeps its balance and poise, its fruit-driven personality and the approachability from previous years. It has contained ripeness, 14.05% alcohol, clean aromas and a juicy and velvety texture. Highly drinkable. It’s a blend of 94% Tinto Fino [Tempranillo], 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. ARDAL CRIANZA 2021 DO Ribera del Duero, Spain A lovely nose of red, black and purple fruits are accented by an earthy charm. On the palate it’s pure velvet, with an almost astonishing purity of fruit. Despite the rather heavy stature of the wine – the tannins are very much present – I can’t help but appreciate how easy this is to drink. Pair with anything from the BBQ or a juicy steak! The best Ribera del Duero reds exhibit the impressive structure, elegance and potential longevity for which Tempranillo is known. What typically sets these wines apart from those of Rioja is a bit of extra power, ruggedness and intensity thanks to the more extreme growing conditions from its higher elevation and bigger day-night temperature swings. For those new to Ribera del Duero, think of the region’s red wines as existing somewhere between the reds of Rioja and Cabernet Sauvignon grown in high-altitude mountain vineyards.

VQA St. David’s Bench, Niagara-on-the-Lake The grapes are from the Lingard Vineyard on the St. David’s Bench that was planted in 2006 to the 21b Clone. Fermentation was stopped to leave a bit of residual sugar (8 g/l) to balance the crisp acidity. A classic Niagara Riesling nose of lime, grapefruit, floral lift, lanolin and white peach. It’s nicely balanced on the palate with lip-smacking citrus, summer peaches, ginger, honeycomb and yellow apple with a zippy, lifted finish. Can cellar through 2031.
