CHARDONNAY STYLE

More than any other wine variety, Chardonnay is famous for its stylistic versatility. Depending on the choices made in the vineyard and winery, it can produce wines ranging from exquisitely light and crisp to remarkably rich and robust. (To say nothing of the sweet and sparkling wines it produces, but that’s a story for another day.) Climate is the baseline factor in shaping a Chardonnay’s ultimate style, but it’s not everything. Cool climates tend to produce light, crisp wines while warm climates tend to produce fuller, richer ones. Winemakers can lean into these tendencies, but when they don’t, there are plenty of tricks and techniques at their disposal.
