Dining out in Trapani, Sicily.

INIMITABLE ITALY

Not only does Italy feature several mainland Mediterranean wine-growing regions, but like Greece, its wine scene extends to islands in the Mediterranean Sea itself. Perhaps best known among these is the island of Sicily, on which stands Mount Etna – the largest active volcano in Europe – in addition to ancient Phoenician, Greek and Roman archaeological sites. While cinephiles became enamoured with the beauty of Sicily due to its appearance in the Godfather films, oenophiles have long been enamoured with the island’s wines. All of Italy’s many Mediterra nean regions are renowned for elegant, characterful wines that often spotlight local grape varieties and are equally good for sipping solo or pairing with food.
