WINZER KREMS KREMSER KREUZBERG RESERVE RIESLING 2022 DAC Kremstal, Austria, sustainable, vegan “The Kremser Vineyard is on primarily rock soil and shows a very high minerality. The 2022 vintage was a very good vintage with a very high ripeness, but very nice fruit of the typical peaches and, as in all our Rieslings, a little bit of apricot. It’s the perfect wine for seafood like grilled fish, sushi, or prawns with curry that’s a little spicy.” (Thomas Brunner) 95 points (International Wine Challenge) Aromatic & Flavourful 44857 (D) 750 mL $29.95 2 New at Vintages
The world is at an exciting point. As the cost of renewable energy and other sustainability initiatives come down, actions that benefit the environment aren’t solely altruistic; they’re good for business. On July 30, 2023, Winzer Krems cut the ribbon on a four-year, 37-million-euro project that saw them totally rebuild their winery, bottling plant and logistics hall. One of the largest investments in the history of the Austrian wine industry, it was conceived with maxi mum sustainability in mind. “Solar energy was very important, because after the Ukraine war, energy costs are increasing immensely,” says international account manager Thomas Brunner. Installing a 377 kWp photovoltaic system and switching from gas to district heating provides cost-effective, reliable, resilient energy. The green roofs have a temperature-regulating effect on the rooms below and store water. Recyclable packaging, lightweight bottles, on-site bottling, and the use of natural light also reduce costs and carbon emissions. The new buildings were designed in consultation with employees. “It was very important, as we built a new cellar, that we have daylight in there,” says Brunner. “If you’re in the cellar for eight or nine hours and you see no sunlight all day, it’s not the best for mental health.” All Winzer Krems wines have been certified by Sustainable Austria since 2022. “As one of the biggest producers of wine in Austria, we have to be a positive leader,” says Brunner. “And for the next generation, we must do what we can to protect nature and our homeland. Austria is very connected to tourism, and here at Winzer Krems we have created a tourism wine experience. We have more than 30,000 visitors a year. When you go out in the vineyard you see this miraculous place, you see the animals and the flowers and the bees. And Austria is known for that. It’s known for the culture, for nature, the Danube, the vineyards, the apricot trees. I would say it’s the Austrian soul.”
WINZER KREMS RIED KREMSER WACHTBERG RESERVE GRÜNER VELTLINER 2023 DAC Kremstal, Austria, sustainable, vegan “This is from one of the best-known vineyards in the Kremstal. It’s harvested very late, so it has very high ripeness. It’s more of a creamy style of Grüner due to the long lees contact. I really prefer to have it with tafelspitz (boiled beef, vegetables and potatoes served with apple and horseradish). It also goes very well with Asian cuisine and spicy food because of the nice acidity.” (Thomas Brunner) 93 points (falstaff.com) Aromatic & Flavourful 15704 (XD) 750 mL $29.95 2
