Liquid gold at Le Clos Jordanne. ABOVE: Rosehall Run near the town of Wellington.
Cloudsley Cellars crafted their 2022 Twenty Mile Bench Chardonnay using fruit from two carefully selected vineyard sites tended by the highly respected Wismer family: 85% from Foxcroft Vineyard and 15% from Wingfield Vineyard. The wine is vinified in barrel using ambient yeast before spending a further 18 months in French oak. The result is a classic, elegant Chardonnay that beautifully conveys Bench minerality and character. The 2023 Béton (“concrete”) Chardon nay from Hidden Bench is made with 100% estate fruit organically grown on Niagara’s Beamsville Bench. Fruit is
whole-bunch pressed before fermen tation in concrete using ambient yeast, after which the wine is aged 10 months in concrete and an additional eight in stainless steel before it’s bottled unfiltered. This is an expansive, textured Chardonnay with brilliant acidity and mineral tones. Le Clos Jordanne has a rich history of creating world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Niagara. Their 2022 Claystone Terrace Chardonnay is sourced from a single vineyard on Twenty Mile Bench. Each vine shoot is meticulously positioned by hand for better ventilation and concentration of
the grape clusters. All that careful work pays off in a delicate, eloquent wine with remarkable clarity of expression. One of the leading lights of Prince Edward County, Rosehall Run made the 2022 JCR Chardonnay from old vines (20+ years) grown in two historic blocks of their estate vineyard. The wine was vinified in French oak and spent a total of 20 months maturing in barrels before bottling. The finished wine is gorgeously graceful and deftly oaked, with a subtle mineral underpinning.
