Chard produces high-quality wines in a variety of styles, from the fresh, taut and lean to the full-bodied and oaked, and even sparkling wines. Cool-climate Chards are steely, light-bodied, crisp wines with apple, pear, citrus, mineral, and uplifting acidity.

FOOD PAIRING Lighter styles of Chardonnay are excellent with seafood, while bolder wines are well-matched to grilled salmon, chicken or pork. Both will work well with Spanish-style grilled veggies.

Open hearted, it delivers an umami texture on the palate with equal parts baked apple, pear and tropical fruits. Finishes a tad short but, hey, there are plenty of positives to enjoy. SAUVIGNON BLANC

The darling of the Loire, Sauvignon Blanc is planted throughout the world in cool coastal or lake-influenced regions. Rarely shy, Sauvignon Blancs are bright and tangy with high acidity and flavours that can include mango, tropical fruit, apple, gooseberry and grapefruit, with grassy and herbal tones. The most famous examples include those from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in the Loire and those from Marlborough in New Zealand. Marlborough Sauvignons are particularly intense and pungent.

SANTA RITA MEDALLA REAL GRAN RESERVA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023 Valle de Leyda, Chile From vineyards in the Leyda Valley, toward the coast of Central Chile, about 15 kilometers from the Pacific, this is a fruity and refreshing sauvignon with juicy acidity that’s very well integrated with the tart white-fruit flavors that dominate the palate. A creamy-textured wine to accompany grilled white fish. Score: 92 (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2024) Aromatic & Flavourful 42097 (XD) 750 mL $18.95 1 New at Vintages

CHILL FACTORS

Chill these wines for 2-3 hours in the fridge or 20-30 minutes in an ice bucket. The golden rule about the right glass for your summer wine is that if it holds the wine, it’s perfect, but white wines do perform best in stemmed glasses with narrow bowls. The stem helps keep your hands from warming the wine, while the tapered bowl preserves the wine’s aromatic qualities.

CAPE POINT NOORDHOEK SAUVIGNON BLANC 2022 WO Cape Town, South Africa This is a fulsome rounded and fairly well balanced sauvignon with tropical kiwi, green pepper and fine fresh herb/evergreen. Very much in the Cape style, not NZ or France. And despite its richness and warmth it displays a sense of grip, minerality and cohesion I really like. The focus and length are excellent. PINOT GRIGIO/ PINOT GRIS Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape, though the wines that bear their names are worlds apart stylistically. Pinot Grigio originated in northeastern Italy and Pinot Gris in Alsace, France, and both are now made around the world. Pinot Grigios are light, fresh wines with high acidity and delicate fruit flavours, while Pinot Gris wines are fuller-bodied, with ripe, lush fruit and a rich, silky texture.

LUNGAROTTI IL POMETO PINOT GRIGIO 2024 IGT Umbria, Italy

FOOD PAIRING Versatile and food-friendly, Pinot Grigio is great for sipping, seafood, summer salads or prosciutto. Pinot Gris will match well with grilled sausages or grilled pan-seared tofu fillets.

Umbria isn’t typically associated with Pinot Grigio, and discovering such a top-quality example in the tasting lineup really got our buyers excited. When you experience this wine’s delicate floral tones, vibrant peach, apple, orange peel, banana, savoury herbs, and evocative hint of Mediterranean scrub, you’ll be just as delighted and impressed as we are. A wine to talk about over freshwater fish or chickpea-and-tofu curry. Light & Crisp 41908 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2 New at Vintages

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE What makes a white wine refreshing? White wines are perfectly suited for summer dining. They’re bright and crisp with fruit-forward, summer-loving flavours of citrus, apple, peach and pear, and some offer exotic-fruit tones that will transport your senses to the tropics. The majority are unoaked or lightly oaked, with moderate alcohol levels that keep the wines feeling light, and most importantly, they have high levels of mouth-watering, thirst-quenching acidity. Served chilled, these wines provide a delicious complement to the heat and are perfect for summer salads, seafood, and finger foods of all stripes.

RIESLING Riesling can be made in any style from bone-dry to lusciously sweet Icewine, but all share a brilliant acidity. Pair this off-dry example with spicy grilled shrimp.

SAUVIGNON BLANC/ SÉMILLON Bordeaux’s largest white wine region, Entre-Deux-Mers produces wines that are bright and citrusy. They take the liveliness and freshness of Sauvignon Blanc and blend them with the struc ture and weight of Sémillon.

GRÜNER VELTLINER

Native to Austria, Grüner Veltliner can be either lean and peppery or rich and full-bodied with ripe fruit. Both styles have the grape’s celebrated high acidity, making all Grüners fresh and zesty.

CHÂTEAU DE FONTENILLE BLANC 2023 AC Entre-Deux-Mers, Bordeaux, France, sustainable (Stéphane Defraine) A grapefruit-juice aroma and ripe citrus and green-fruit flavors give this wine a crisp texture. It is finely balanced; acidity and rich fruits sit comfortably in harmony. Drink this attractive wine now. Best Buy. TAWSE SKETCHES RIESLING 2022 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario Clean, crisp, and classic, the Sketches riesling offers flavours of ripe peaches, apples, and apricots, alongside a faint, shower curtain- adjacent aroma. There is sweetness here for sure, but it is balanced by tart acidity. I would drink this riesling over the next couple of years, perhaps paired with sweet and spicy sauces, something along the lines of Thai, Laotian, and Indian curries. Tasted June 2024. SÍRIA Known as Roupeiro, Códega or Crato in various regions of its native Portugal, Síria is thought to be the country’s oldest white grape. It’s highly aromatic and floral, with citrus, melon and peach.

GODELLO Indigenous to Spain, Godello offers pear, apple, citrus, herbs, and a flinty minerality. Whether crafted in a light unoaked style or a fuller, lees-aged, oaked mode, Godello always maintains its superb acidity.

QUINTA DO CARDO 2023 DOC Beira Interior, Portugal

ABAD DOM BUENO GODELLO 2022 DO Bierzo, Spain Lightly spiced apples with a hint of cumin and fennel to the wet stones, white fruit and green apples. This white wine from Quinta Do Cardo is made with indigenous grape variety siria, also known as roupeiro in Alentejo. It is distinctly salty and delicately fleshy, with refreshing acids. CAMPANIA: SOUTHERN CHARM

22 VINTAGES

Steeply tiered, picturesque coastal villages emerging from rugged mountains overlooking breathtakingly blue waters may seem like dreamlike invention, but Campania, on Italy’s southwest coast, is a real region known for crafting unique wines from indigenous grapes. Campania is one of Italy’s oldest wine-producing regions, with a tradition that stretches back thousands of years and laurels that include being the home of Falernum: the wine that was reserved exclusively for Roman emperors. Plentiful sunshine, a Mediterranean climate, a long growing season, moun tainous terrain, and the region’s famed volcanic soils allow a wide range of high-quality grapes to flourish.

IL POGGIO SANNIO AGLIANICO 2020 DOP Sourced from vines planted at 300 to 400 metres elevation in the Sannio growing area. Sannios are accessible earlier than the well known Aglianico wines of Taurasi and are rapidly gaining a premium reputation of their own. This intense, bold wine has dried fruit, earth, coffee, sweet spices, and black pepper. A great choice for grilled beef ribs, jackfruit ribs, or pizza. Drink to 2030. Full-bodied & Firm 575225 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2

Winemakers here focus mainly on the region’s impressive assortment of indigenous grapes. The white grape Greco di Tufo takes its name from “tuff”: the soft volcanic rock that makes up much of the region’s subsoil and imparts Greco di Tufo’s distinct mineral component. The fragrant Falanghina is Campania’s signature white grape, though like Greco di Tufo, it’s thought to have originated in Greece. In Campania’s volcanic soils, Falanghina reveals a bright, zesty character, with snappy apple and spice atop the region’s noted mineral underpinning. Aglianico is the most important red variety here, with the finest examples coming from the Taurasi area. The refinement and ageability of these wines have earned them a reputation as the Barolo of the south. In concert with preserving Campania’s noble wine heritage, winemakers here are also heavily invested in securing the future through sustainable wine making practices. Hilly, rugged and visually stunning, Campania is a popular tourist destination beloved for its food and its many sites of historical interest, which include the city of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii.

An insider’s guide to great Ontario wines.

I love it

because... Sourced from vines brought over from Abruzzo, Italy, it’s the only Ontario grown and -made Pecorino. 1. 2. It has notes of apple, citrus and peach, with crisp acidity. 3. It’s a great summer sipper!
