Emiliana have been organic and biodynamic since their inception in 1998. Over the years, they’ve refined their systems to protect the biodiversity of their land, the biological activity of their soils, and the well-being of their employees. The result? Award-winning wines that speak clearly of their origins. SOIL It all starts with healthy soil. Instead of using artificial fertilizers, Emiliana fortify their soils with compost and lots of organic matter, allowing bacteria and fungi to grow abundantly. PLANTS Cover crops sown between vine rows help avoid erosion, attract beneficial insects, and improve soil fertility by naturally providing nitrogen and nutrients. Emiliana also produce organic honey and olive oil at their estates, and every vineyard has an organic vegetable garden. ANIMALS Native flora and fauna coexist with alpacas, horses, cows, birds, chickens, coots and sheep at Emiliana. SKY Emiliana use a biodynamic calendar to align their agricultural work with solar and lunar cycles, maximizing the growth and development of their crops. LAND Emiliana has more than 1,000 hectares of organic and biody namic vineyards in key sites spanning Chile’s winemaking zone. Careful study of the land and vines allows them to enhance each vineyard’s natural advantages, avoiding external inputs and encouraging clean, transparent, authentic wines.

LOCAL TALENT

A MISSION OF HOPE Four Ontario wineries, in partnership with LCBO, have come together to celebrate the spirit of Ukraine. “It’s about collective impact, one glass at a time,” says Rayla Myhal, co-owner of Featherstone Estate Winery. At LCBO between March 15 and April 11, $1 from each sale of the four fine wines featured here will be donated to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation. Funds raised will purchase heating equipment, blankets, stoves, and food hampers for Ukrainian families in need. Plus, the four wineries are hosting the Ukrainian Bench Tour from March 28 to 29, where guests can visit the wineries to celebrate Ukrainian food and wine, with proceeds from tickets supporting the foundation.

LOCAL TALENT

FROM LEFT: George Myhal, Rayla Myhal, and David Johnson.

Nadia Senchuk.

Rosewood released their first vintages of wine and mead in 2008, but their story stretches back much further; the family have been beekeepers for more than 90 years. Their intimate relationship with their land has made them leaders in sustainability, implementing measures like integrated pest management and wild yeasts in their winemaking. “As Canadian Ukrainians rooted in Niagara, the Ukrainian Bench Tour represents a way that our wineries could create space for awareness, learning and connection in a way that felt genuine and welcoming,” says William Roman, general manager of Rosewood Estates.

Well-known and well-loved by Vintages customers, Featherstone has been under new management since 2024. After 25 years, founders Louise Engel and her winemaker husband, David Johnson, turned over the reins to Rayla and George Myhal. Featherstone’s wines have been paragons of quality, style and authenticity; a legacy the Myhals are proud to continue. “I’m a philanthropist at heart and have been a member of the Ukrainian community for two decades. I wanted to envision a way to blend my love for the land with a mission of hope,” says Rayla Myhal, co-owner of Featherstone Estate Winery. “It’s about community and being able to help support and uplift others.”

In 2011, Ilya and Nadia Senchuk established Leaning Post Wines in a part of Niagara that was not considered viable for serious winemaking. The success of their diverse portfolio has more than justified their daring choice. “Being of Ukrainian origin, the Ukrainian Bench Tour holds deep personal meaning for me and my husband, Ilya. It’s a way to honour our heritage while showing tangible support for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Guests are invited to explore Ukrainian culture through thoughtfully paired food and wine while experiencing elements of Ukrainian art, storytelling and tradition,” says Nadia Senchuk, sommelier and co-founder of Leaning Post Wines.

Kacaba is focused on producing premium-quality small-batch wines of authenticity that emphasize fruit, finesse and affordability. The Kacaba Vineyard includes one of Ontario’s first significant plantings of Syrah. “When Ukraine’s third president, Viktor Yushchenko, visited Ontario in 2005, Kacaba Vineyards had the honour of hosting him. He showed a keen interest in what Ontario’s wine industry had accomplished in a short time and no doubt shared those insights as Ukraine’s own industry evolved,” says Michael Kacaba, owner of Kacaba Vineyards.
