MUGA SELECCIÓN ESPECIAL 2020 DOCa Rioja From a slightly more challenging year for the region, the 2020 Muga Selección Especial checks in as 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo that’s aged six months in new French barrique, followed by two full years in older French and American (70/30) oak barriques. Rocking levels of cassis and black raspberry-like fruit as well as graphite, spicy wood, violets, and lead pencil notes all shine on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and silky tannins. CHURCHILL’S GRAFITE DOURO RED 2021 DOP

Founded by fifth-generation winemaker Johnny Graham in 1981, Churchill’s is a family-owned and -operated winery that focuses on revealing the Douro’s complex terroir through grapes indigenous to the area. Grafite features Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz sourced from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior sub-regions. It’s balanced and long, with wildflower florals, dark fruit, herbs, forest floor, and dry spices.

R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA TONDONIA RESERVA 2013 DOCa Rioja

SPAIN WHITE WINE

The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic – refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia. Drinking window: 2025 2055. Rueda is an historic white-wine-producing region, and the local Verdejo grape is its pride and joy. This one comes from 15-year-old vines and has the distinct, complex aromatic character one would expect to find. It’s refreshing and crisp, with flavours of green apple, lime, lemon, garden herbs and tropical fruit, with a fine mineral finish. Pair with roast chicken or seafood stew.
