Sweet and tart berries and fresh flowers kick o the palate, then crushed stones and herbs make themselves known. Strawberries and raspberries star on the palate, while undertones of orange peel, wild fennel and pepper provide balance. An integrated, coherent, immensely enjoyable wine. Col d’Orcia is hardly a secret, but could still be considered underappreciated for how great it is at this price threshold. A portion of the grapes are kept on the vine for four weeks while the rest are fermented. The freshly crushed juice, skins, pips and stems of the held grapes are then added to the wine post-fermentation, enhancing the intensity and concentration of the raspberry, plum and cherry tones in this long, spicy wine.
