Piedmont Situated among the Alps in northwestern Italy, Piedmont is home to farmhouse estates making wines that eloquently express their terroir. Different vine varieties are planted according to their elevation and aspect on the hillsides, with delicate Dolcetto and floral Moscato (for sparkling wines) in the cooler upper reaches; powerfully structured Nebbiolo on the sunny south-facing lower slopes; and softly fruity Barbera in between. A handful of hilly villages specialize in white wines made with aromatic Arneis and crisp Cortese, with the latter especially renowned in Gavi. Wines made from Nebbiolo – including Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara – are among the most long-lived in the world, and accordingly, among the most prized by collectors.

Food pairings WHITE WINES Vitello tonnato (cold veal with tuna sauce) RED WINES Beef agnolotti with white truffles

Tuscany At the heart of western Italy and touching the Mediterranean along the Tyrrhenian Sea, Tuscany, birthplace of Renaissance art and architecture, is equally renowned for its wines. In between the cypress trees, olive groves and sun-drenched vineyards, the landscape is dotted with stately villas in which are crafted some of Italy’s most famous wines. The region’s signature grape variety is Sangiovese, known for its tangy cherry, violet and earthy tones, which is used to create the wines Brunello and Chianti. The region is also home to the Super Tuscans: wines made using international grape varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot, sometimes blended with Sangiovese. Tuscany’s finest white wines are made from the vibrant, citrusy Vernaccia grape.

TENUTE SILVIO NARDI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2019 DOCG In the bottle with the burgundy-colored label, the Tenute Silvio Nardi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a layered and generous wine with black fruit, cherry, spice and a hint of Provençal mixed herbs on black olive. There are further hints of underbrush, crushed slate, petrichor from schistic soils, and toasted almond that adds some sweetness from French oak. The tannins are velvety and soft, but this wine is regularly balanced throughout. Drink date: 2025-2040. LORNANO CHIANTI CLASSICO 2020 DOCG Made from 100% Sangiovese, this wine spent 12 months maturing in French oak. It’s smooth and velvety, with deep, dark fruit and good intensity and vibrancy. Blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry all reveal themselves, along with a lovely vanilla oak note. [Luca Maroni tasting note not available.] Score: 98 (lucamaroni.com, July 3, 2023) Medium-bodied & Fruity 211599 (XD) 750 ml $22.95 2 Featured as our Wine of the Month TENUTA DI GRACCIANO DELLA SETA VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO 2021 DOCG The 2021 expresses the conditions of the vintage with an overall density but remains balanced and agile. In-house enologist, Giuseppe Rigoli explains that a small portion of the grapes were harvested very early for freshness and the remainder brought in by the end of September. He also carried out a slightly shorter maceration of 15 days (compared to 20 in 2020). The wine emerges with hints of vanilla then progresses to mint and violet. Sandy-textured tannins hem in concentrated red berries and grip assertively on the finish. The pristine quality of the fruit shines through and saline nuances persist. Drinking window: 2025-2035. Score: 93 (Michaela Morris, decanter.com, April 28, 2024) Medium-bodied & Fruity 487074 (XD) 750 ml $33.95 2

ISOLE E OLENA CEPPARELLO 2021 IGT Toscana In this vintage Cepparello shows very restrained notes of red cherries, dried violets and a lot of stony minerality. There is a meaty and savory character in depth. Overall very precise and integrated. Velvety tannins dominate the palate, showing a chalky texture, even dusty, with a full body, amazing concentration and very refreshing acidity. The finish is brightly focused on cherry pits. A good wine for the long haul. Possibly one of the best Cepparello ever. Best after 2031. Score: 99 (jamessuckling.com, July 2, 2024) Full-bodied & Firm 28768 (XD) 750 ml $198.95 3

The view from a San Gimignano balcony.

Veneto Stretching from the Adriatic Sea to the alpine Austrian border in north eastern Italy, Veneto is home to mountains, lakes, and wines made in a very particular style. The region is famous for the appassimento method, which employs partially dried grapes to create a variety of wine styles, including sweet Recioto and rich yet dry Amarone. Red wines are typically blends containing elegantly nutty Corvina, delicate Molinara and robust Rondinella. The region’s most famous white wine is the crisp and citrusy Soave, made from fresh, undried Garganega grapes grown in the volcanic soils of the hillsides east of Verona.

BRIGALDARA CAVOLO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA 2019 DOCG, sustainable The 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Cavolo impresses with its remarkably pretty bouquet of dusty roses, shavings of cedar and cocoa- dusted black cherries. This is soothingly round yet energetic, with fresh acidity and bright wild berry fruits that swirl as hints of espresso bean and dark chocolate add a bitter bite. Long and staining, the 2019 lingers on as a web of fine tannins forms a classically dry sensation, offset by a tinge of sour orange. Always more approachable in its youth, the Cavolo is an overachiever today but amply balanced for the cellar. Drinking window: 2026-2040. What’s in a name?

Italian wine names can be confusing to the uninitiated. Often a wine is named for a place, but other times for a style or grape variety, and it can be tricky to differentiate. Perhaps the most mind-boggling case in point is that “Montepulciano” can be a place or a grape variety, depending on context: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a wine made from Sangiovese and other grapes in the town of Montepulciano, in Tuscany; whereas Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a wine made from Montepulciano grapes grown in the Abruzzo region.

Abruzzo This mountainous, coastal south-central Italian region is called “the greenest place in Europe” because nearly half its territory is devoted to national parks and protected nature reserves. Abruzzo stretches from the Adriatic Sea in the east to mountainous steppes in the west. Its most distinguished red wines are made from the smoky and herbaceous Montepulciano grape, and its crisp white wines are often made from Pecorino or Trebbiano.

Campania Basking on the Tyrrhenian Sea in southwestern Italy, Campania has been famous for its winemaking since ancient times. The region features a mountainous interior, while the landscape nearer the coast is characterized by volcanoes, including Vesuvius. Citrus, fig and nut trees flourish in the Mediterranean climate. Campania’s most prestigious red wine is the dark and spicy Taurasi, made from the Aglianico grape, while many of the region’s finest white wines are made from the herbaceous Falanghina variety.

Emilia- Romagna

Reaching from the Adriatic Sea in the east nearly all the way to the Ligurian Sea in the west, Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy has a diverse topography ranging from coastline to towering hills and central plains. Some of the region’s most renowned wines are crafted from the delightfully fruity Lambrusco grape, which is used to make both still and sparkling red wines, while vibrant white wines are made from a range of varieties including Trebbiano.

Friuli Perched in the mountains of Italy’s furthest northeastern reaches, Friuli borders Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, and the region’s culture reflects a confluence of Italian, Germanic and Slavic influences. Its wine scene is perhaps even more diverse, with over half of the region’s wines made from international grape varieties. Friuli is particularly known for crisp, racy wines made from Pinot Grigio, while Merlot plays a major role in its red wines.

Puglia

The “heel” of the southern Italian peninsula plunging into the Mediterranean, Puglia has a longer coastline than any other region of mainland Italy. Its climate is hot, dry and sunny, making for bold red wines from smoky Negroamaro and spicy Primitivo (the latter being genetically identical to Zinfandel). Some of Puglia’s finest white wines are made from the aromatic Verdeca grape.

The island of Ortigia, Sicily, stretches into the Ionian Sea.

Sicily

Situated in the Mediterranean just off the southernmost tip of the Italian mainland, Sicily was famous in the ancient world as a stopover along trade routes, and it’s no less a cultural and tourist hotspot today. The island’s hot, arid climate creates robust, deeply fruity red wines from the Nero d’Avola grape, while remarkably elegant reds are made from Nerello Mascalese grown at higher altitudes on the slopes of Mount Etna. Sicily’s finest white wines are made from the floral Grillo and Inzolia varieties.

FIRST AMONG EQUALS Chile’s Limarí Valley crafts world-class treasures carved from fog and limestone.

The Limarí Valley is a hotbed of sustainability where limited water has made conservation a necessity. Over the last 15 years, it’s risen to become Chile’s go-to region for top-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and more. Limarí sits well beyond latitudes traditionally considered optimal for premium wine. At 30° south and abutting the world’s driest desert (the Atacama), Limarí seems an unlikely, inhospitable location for the creation of top-tier expressions. Yet Limarí produces Chile’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, racy Sauvignon Blanc, a distinctively graceful style of Syrah, and many other excellent wines. But how? Vineyards in the Limarí Valley are planted at altitudes from sea level to nearly 2,000 metres elevation and experience the same moderating ocean influence as the rest of Chile’s coastal regions: the Humboldt Current. The Humboldt’s effect manifests as bracing morning temperatures and cold nights. In Limarí, when the current’s cool ocean breezes collide with the hot, dry Atacama Desert air, it generates a unique, dense morning fog known as the camanchaca . This fog blankets the vineyards until the afternoon, when the sun burns it away, allowing the grapes to soak up the brilliant sunshine necessary for proper maturation and ripening. Interesting, yes, but surely other regions have cool, foggy mornings and high-altitude plantings? Certainly some do, but nowhere else in Chile does one find a richer concentration of limestone soils. Elsewhere in Chile, decomposed granite typically dominates. Limarí’s unique limestone soils impart structure and minerality while, most importantly, allowing the grapes to preserve even more of their high natural acidity as they ripen. This translates to wines with a freshness that no other region in Chile can attain, setting Limarí’s wines apart from other premium-quality Chilean coastal cool-climate centres, such as Casablanca.

Cave Spring CSV Cave Spring Vineyard Estate Grown Riesling 2022

Flat Rock Good Kharma Chardonnay 2024

Featherstone Rosé 2024 The blend for this long-time customer favourite is a little different year to year, though it’s always made with red grapes – Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Pinot Noir in 2024. Rosé is a great choice for big meals and this one, with its lively colour, is both visually appealing and tasty. Louise Engel and her husband, David Johnson, founded Featherstone in 1999 following a successful career as proprietors of the Guelph Poultry Gourmet Market, so it’s no surprise that this rosé will be great with turkey. But it also has the reach to work brilliantly with something like salmon fillets topped with ginger-cranberry sauce, or a roasted-butternut-squash risotto.

If the old axiom “you are known by the company you keep” has any value to you, then you’ll want a bottle of the Good Kharma Chardonnay on your Thanksgiving table. Since 2013, a portion of sales of Good Kharma have gone to support Feed Ontario (formerly the Ontario Association of Food Banks). Sales of this wine have provided more than 200,000 meals to date. But this blend of parcels from the North and West blocks of Flat Rock Vineyard delivers much more than just good feelings; it’s a superb value for a benchmark expression of Niagara Chardonnay. Food-friendly and versatile, it’s great with turkey or glazed ham and especially delicious with cauliflower au gratin or vegetarian stuffed mushrooms.

Looking for a truly homegrown Riesling to enjoy with your Thanksgiving meal? Few wines come with the pedigree or the provenance of this dynamo from Cave Spring. They were among the very first to plant Riesling in Niagara, in 1978, and this wine delivers the complexity, character and depth that old vines promise, exhibiting a grace and elegance that will raise your meal from the merely superb to the deliciously celestial. This wine has the body and texture to take on a traditional turkey dinner without being over whelmed. The acidity will cut through any richer elements like the gravy, while the vibrant fruit will dance a tasty tango with cranberry sauce and veggies.

The price to quality ratio is outstanding! This Gamay has already established itself as a classic expression. One can only imagine what heights it will achieve in vintages to come. Light-bodied & Fruity 20422 (XD) 750 ml $29.95 2 4 Organic product HIDDEN BENCH GAMAY 2023 6 VQA West Niagara, Niagara

Hidden Bench Gamay 2023 Niagara Gamays, to put it bluntly, kick ass. The Gamay grape is not widely successful outside of Beaujolais, France, but it thrives in Niagara’s ancient limestone soils and has become something of an Ontario specialty. This one from Hidden Bench pushes the quality bar unapologetically into Beaujolais-cru territory. Lithe, fresh, sophisticated and concentrated with earth, red fruit, cranberry and spice tones, it’s simply stunning and – take a deep breath – it’s even better with food. The trick would be finding something it can’t pair with. Try it with turkey roulade, roast turkey with mushroom gravy, or butternut squash steaks.
