Hidden Bench Gamay 2023 Niagara Gamays, to put it bluntly, kick ass. The Gamay grape is not widely successful outside of Beaujolais, France, but it thrives in Niagara’s ancient limestone soils and has become something of an Ontario specialty. This one from Hidden Bench pushes the quality bar unapologetically into Beaujolais-cru territory. Lithe, fresh, sophisticated and concentrated with earth, red fruit, cranberry and spice tones, it’s simply stunning and – take a deep breath – it’s even better with food. The trick would be finding something it can’t pair with. Try it with turkey roulade, roast turkey with mushroom gravy, or butternut squash steaks.
