A youthful wine full of fruit, showing intense fresh roses, black cherries and plums. The generous nose is supported by a lush, supple palate with medium body. Velvety tannins with a chalkier finish and refreshing length. Drink or hold [into late 2030s]. Score: 93 (jamessuckling.com, March 12, 2025) Medium-bodied & Fruity 540971 (XD) 750 ml $39.95 2 VENETO SCUOLA GRANDE AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA 2020 DOCG Voluminous and imposing, even by Amarone standards, this chest-warming, well-structured blend of dried grapes requires air or more time in bottle to fully reveal itself. The intensity and density of the palate suggests a substantial amount of dry extract while a slight bitterness helps to freshen the palate. Spicy oak is fully soaked up by the thick fruit and the length is very good. A bit coarse at present but is likely to settle with time. A nicely oxidative rendition of viura that shows a honeyed, nutty overlay to the pie crust, pastry and waxed lemons. Medium- to full-bodied with a leesy center palate and a long, dry, flavorful finish. There’s a nice touch of butterscotch at the end. Drink now or hold.
