LCBO Food & Drink Summer 2019

THE MOSCOW MULE

Do you need a coppermug? While bartenders have long debated the merits of copper mugs, the short an- swer is no. The drink tastes great in a rocks glass with ice, or a Highball if you like more ginger beer. However, there are merits to using the classic vessel. Copper keeps the drink very cold, but even more importantly, the presentation lends to the appeal of the drink.

Once very hard to find, the copper mug can now be found in home stores, kitchen stores and even some grocery stores. You can even scour antique shops for some amazing vintage cups.

What is the best variation on a Mule? The Moscow Mule pairs the exotic spice of ginger beer with a neutral vodka base and hint of lime. It is this simplicity that makes it so easy to customize—let’s get creative!

Combo it! Our most popular modern Mule invention is a mash-up of flavours that works. We combine 1 ⁄ oz tequila, 1 oz pineapple juice, ⁄ oz lime juice, a dash of Tabasco and 3 oz ginger beer. The combination of sweet, spicy, earthy and savoury is a wonderful burst to the palate.

Add a flavour Muddled fruit is a favourite, especially in sum- mer. We love crushed peaches, blackberries or any berries in season. You can also add fruit juices; we prefer the viscous fruits such as apricot or mango.

Change your spirit Variations on the Mule abound, the most ubi- quitous being the Dark ’n’ Stormy, where vodka is substituted with Goslings Black Seal rum ( LCBO 633271, $28.95). The recent whisky craze has seen the popularity of the Kentucky Mule rise, using, you guessed it, bourbon as its base.
