WORTH A STOP!

Thunder Bay

Although the season is restricted to snow-free months, a small collection of mobile vendors work diligently to feed diners between the former cities of Port Arthur, Fort Williams and the intercity area between them. Whether it’s at a business park outside the city’s core or at the Sunday farmer’s market, hungry foodies can locate the mobile vendors through individual truck social media feeds and apps. The Lakehead’s strong and tight-knit culinary scene means that many food operators end up working together for charity events, festivals and parties around the city. That includes Beer Fest in June at Sleeping Giant Brewing Company, weekly music festivals including Live on the Waterfront on Wednesdays, Blues Festival in July, or the BrewHa! Craft Beer Festival in August.

Hot Paddle Pizza Fire a trailer-mounted wood-fired pizza oven at 1000°F for 90 seconds and what do you get? The most popular pie in town, the Fig & Pig: that’s mozzarel- la, prosciutto, bacon and fresh fig jam, drizzled with balsamic reduction. This truck won The Walleye magazine’s favourite market vendor for 2019.

Local Motion Food Truck Chef Nikos Mantis of Pinetree Catering brings his Northern fusion food philosophy to street level, supporting local suppliers in the process. Try the popular Pickerel Taco that comes in a fried bannock shell with local Thunder Oak Gouda cheese and greens, or the Pan-Fried Walleye that’s served with a fresh tomato cilantro salsa fresca.

INSIDER DISH

Pairing potential: Watch for on-site events at Sleeping Giant Brewing Company.

On a roll: Local Motion’s Chef Mantis won Top Chef Thunder Bay 2014 with the truck’s winning duck confit spring rolls.

Whether it’s barbecued chicken with Caribbean or African rice or the curry potato and channa roti, you don’t need to look any further for traditional West African, Caribbean and Sri Lankan comfort foods than D’Culture Shock. But when Trini curry chicken roti is on the menu, don’t hesitate for the popular and often sold-out dish.
