CHILE RED WINE AVES DEL SUR GRAN RESERVA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2020 Valle del Maipo, vegan
AUSTRALIA WHITE WINE
TAHBILK MARSANNE 2024 Nagambie Lakes, Central Victoria, estate grown and bottled, sustainable
Bold and big, with concentrated fruit, good structure and characterful expression. Look for cassis, black fruit, toffee, chocolate, and ripe red fruit. Great for food. [Mundus Vini did not include a tasting note. Best of Show Chile Red.] Score: Grand Gold (Mundus Vini, Spring Tasting 2025) Full-bodied & Firm 48145 (XD) 750 ml $25.95 2
One of the top value Aussie whites going – year in, year out. It is unwooded and so the purity of varietal expression is keen, with the prettiest of spring florals on display and a brightness of citrus that sparks the palate. Honeysuckle, citrus blossom and acacia work with citrus, quince, green apple and a lemon sorbet tang to ignite the tastebuds, hand in hand with juicy acidity. A mid-palate creaminess opens up the food-matching possibilities. I’m thinking lobster meunière. As for ageing? It’s up for a decade or more. Drink from: 2025. Drink by: 2038. Special Value. Score: 95 (Jeni Port, winecompanion.com.au, June 19, 2025) Aromatic & Flavourful 117945 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 2
MONTES LIMITED SELECTION CARMENÈRE 2022 DO Valle del Rapel
AUSTRALIA RED WINE
Montes 2022 is a great value Rapel Valley Carmenère at $18. A juicy and plushy, medium-plus-bodied Carmenère with fresh ripe cherry, strawberry, red currant, blackberry, vanilla and toasty oak spice flavours fresh on the palate, it is a perfect pairing to southwest veggie burgers or a roast duck and lentil ragu. Drink date: 2024®2028. Best Value Wine. Score: 91 (nataliemaclean.com, July 6, 2024)
3 RINGS SHIRAZ 2023 Barossa Valley, South Australia
This is immediately appealing on the nose with blackberry, toasted spice, rich floral, and roasted hazelnut aromas. The palate is equally appealing, delivering succulent fruit intensity with silky texture and fine-grained tannins, making it fabulously drinkable. At its best: now to 2030. ODFJELL CAPÍTULO FLYING FISH RED BLEND 2023 Valle Central, sustainable, vegan
BLEASDALE BROADSIDE SHIRAZ/ CABERNET SAUVIGNON/MALBEC 2023 Langhorne Creek, South Australia A 50% shiraz, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 21% malbec blend, aged nine months in French oak puncheons, 5% new. In other words, this shows a lovely expression of fruit, from black cherries and plums to cassis, but it is more than that. It’s savoury, spicy, juicy with textural tannins and bright acidity throughout. You’d ask for another glass if at a mate’s barbecue. Drink from: 2025. Drink by: 2032. Special Value. Score: 92 (Jane Faulkner, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 12, 2025) Full-bodied & Smooth 632091 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 2
The 2023 Capitulo Flying Fish is a blend based on grapes from the Maule Valley, and this year it includes 40% carignan from Loncomilla and 28% cabernet sauvignon from Cauquenes, both in Maule. In addition, it has 20% malbec from Lontué, in the Curicó Valley and, for the first time, syrah from the coastal San Antonio Valley. And the blend works very well, with carignan as the main actor, providing flowers and tart red fruits. The texture is firm, and the tannins make you think of grilled red meats. [Drink through 2028+.] Score: 91 (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2025)
