... There is good lift on the nose with heightened peony florality, raspberry, fresh cedar and basil. It is medium-full bodied, fairly plush and dense yet nicely structured, with quite gritty somewhat green and bitter tannin. Give it three years; should last beyond 2030. The length is excellent. WINE WONDERS OF NEW ZEALAND ––– Tucked away in the far corner of the map and surrounded by vast ocean, New Zealand can be easy to overlook. But as wine lovers know, it’s well worth exploring. After wowing the world with its dynamic Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand has expanded its repertoire while staying true to its roots.

Vineyards stretch to the horizon in Seddon, Marlborough.
––– The undisputed heartland of New Zealand wine country – especially for Sauvignon Blanc – is Marlborough . The winding valleys among the sheltered waterways of the Marlborough Sounds create conditions reminiscent of the Loire Valley in France. The rugged, ancient mountains and complex soils of Central Otago , famed for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, elicit comparisons with Burgundy. Gimblett Gravels , defined by greywacke sandstone carried down from the mountainsides by the Ngaruroro River, has gravelly soils like Bordeaux and specializes in Cabernet and Merlot. PRIDE OF PLACE

––– After centuries of history in French vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc was indelibly linked with the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. But over the past half-century, New Zealand has become synonymous with a distinctive style of Savvy prized for its sheer intensity of aroma and flavour. Not for the faint of heart, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc takes the variety’s inherent gooseberry, passion fruit and herbaceous notes and turns them up to eleven. SIGNATURE SAVVY

––– Since the ascent of its Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand has shown it’s not just a one-trick pony. Central Otago has become known for Pinot Noir that showcases the variety’s tangy, earthy fruit character. Gimblett Gravels specializes in blends of classic Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot . The overarching cool climate of the islands is ideal for producing Chardonnay in an exciting diversity of styles, in addition to Pinot Gris that straddles the intensity of the classic Alsatian style and the delicacy of Italian Pinot Grigio. Niagara Escarpment, Ontario “It’s a blend of all three of our vineyards, fermented with indigenous yeast. It has a little bit of residual sugar but it’s not cloying at all. It has really nice freshness. This is a great pairing with Asian food across the board – curries, even some spicy Thai, Chinese food – but one of my favourites is what I call the All-Canadian Pairing: scallops from the Bay of Fundy.” Harald Thiel 90 points (Decanter World

When Vintages caught up with Harald Thiel, vigneron/proprietor of Hidden Bench Estate Winery, he was fresh from the Tasting Climate Change conference in Montreal. This is where experts from all over the world gather to discuss climate change’s effects on wine and identify sustainable solutions. “We probably have about 13 or 14 ideas that we got from the conference that we’re going to sit down next week and evaluate,” says Thiel. But for a winery that’s been certified organic since 2013 and using organic practices since 2010, much of the knowledge shared was “a confirmation that the path we’re on is a really good path. “We make our own compost. We try to reduce the amount of tractor work in the vineyard. We have animals on the vineyard,” says Thiel. “We monitor how much water we use. The average winery uses something like nine litres of water per litre of wine. I think we’re under five, just by using water more efficiently and making sure we don’t waste water.” Hidden Bench use geothermal energy for heating and cooling their buildings and winemaking operations, and they installed a 105-panel, 23.5kW solar array in 2007. These systems provide clean energy while reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption. “There’s the Japanese concept of kaizen . We’re always continually trying to improve on our environmental practices. It never stops,” says Thiel. “Being organic makes you work more in the vineyard, because you don’t have the same silver bullets to spray [synthetic insecticides and fungicides]. So you really need the focus on better agriculture within the vineyard, and by doing that, we’re able to produce better wines.”

Syrah is challenging to grow in Ontario, flourishing in only a select few ideal microclimates. The team at Oxley have been working with Syrah for more than a decade, finding success through the use of geotextile blankets that cover and insulate the vines in winter. This LENS take on Syrah is ripe and fresh, with a gorgeous white pepper character.

One of the top value Aussie whites going – year in, year out. It is unwooded and so the purity of varietal expression is keen, with the prettiest of spring florals on display and a brightness of citrus that sparks the palate. Honeysuckle, citrus blossom and acacia work with citrus, quince, green apple and a lemon sorbet tang to ignite the tastebuds, hand in hand with juicy acidity. A mid-palate creaminess opens up the food-matching possibilities. I’m thinking lobster meunière. As for ageing? It’s up for a decade or more. Drink from: 2025. Drink by: 2038. Special Value. MITOLO JESTER CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2021 McLaren Vale, South Australia
From source blocks in the Sellicks Hill district, just south of the Aldinga Airstrip. The locals call the area Whites Valley. Ocean breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent are a great help in tempering the fruit to deliver its best self to the bottle – Cabernet loves a nearby ocean. So there is good varietal character, crushed black berries and tobacco leaf to entice, liqueured fruit cake, dark chocolate, rich plum compote...all held together with neatly retained acidity to keep things juicy and lively in the palate. Varietal tannins arrive midway to keep the wine tight and focused. Definite regional/site expression gives this Cabernet a personal identity. Score: 92 (Tony Love, winepilot.com, Feb. 2025)
