BARKING OWL SHIRAZ 2021 Perth Hills, Great Southern, Western Australia (Millbrook Winery) This ripe, plump wine is full of dark fruit flavour, softened tannins and light acidity for an overall easy-drinking Shiraz with flavours of blackberry jam, fruitcake, black pepper, and toasted oak. The cool-climate Eden Valley is capable of producing Chardonnays of impressive elegance and finesse. This one comes from one of Australia’s most historic cool-climate Chardonnay vineyards, having been established in 1972. MOUNTADAM HIGH EDEN ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2023 High Eden, Eden Valley, South Australia Chardonnay sourced from up in High Eden that comes across as a very classy and instantly appealing style. Nectarine, white peach and citrus fruits meld with notes of soft spice, lemon curd, clotted cream, white flowers and vanillin oak with a creamy, curdy swell pushing through on the palate. BLEASDALE BREMERVIEW SHIRAZ 2022 Langhorne Creek, South Australia Just enough fruit sweetness combined with just enough savouriness. That’s the shtick of this wine, and it’s a good one. Twiggy spice characters play in a pool of ripe plum and black cherry. It tightens through the finish, as you’d hope it would. Not a hair out of place. Drink by: 2030. GOMERSAL GRENACHE/ SHIRAZ/MATARO 2022 Barossa Valley, South Australia

From Sellicks Hill and Blewitt Springs; 12 months in second and third pass French barrels. Black- currant pastille, roasted nori, violet, ripe mulberry and some iodine; this is distinctly varietal, though trimmed of any overt leafiness. There’s a pleasingly supple play across the palate, the tannins gently extracted, running fine and chalky. It’s got some ready drinkability, along with detail and individual character.
