Did you know Chile’s viticultural heritage dates to the 1550s? The country is home to some of the oldest pre-phylloxera plantings of French varieties in the world. These ungrafted time capsules have been protected by Chile’s unique geographical situation; the same setting that has produced some of the world’s most exciting, diverse, value-priced wines. This selection – all under $25 – highlights what Chile does best. DOES BEST WHAT CHILE

Vines and farmland nestle among mountain foothills in Coquimbo, Chile.

SAUVIGNON BLANC One of Chile’s greatest attributes is the value to be found in all its wines. This is best seen in the stunning, refreshing, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blancs produced in Casablanca and Leyda Valley.

VOLCANES DE CHILE RESERVA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2024 DO Valle de Leyda Chile’s volcanic soils are relatively young compared to places like Mount Etna in Sicily. In this Sauvignon Blanc, that geological “youth” translates to heightened aromatics, bolder fruit tones and a supple mouthfeel. Aromatic & Flavourful 47979 (XD) 750 ml $14.95 2 New at Vintages

The quality-to-price ratio of these wines truly has to be tasted to be believed.

CHARDONNAY Chilean Chardonnays lean to the tropical side of the flavour spectrum and are almost Californian in expression. Though such flavours are typically associated with warm growing areas, the cold Humboldt Current makes Chile’s coastal regions decidedly cool. Similarly, wines grown at altitude in the foothills of the Andes benefit from plentiful sunshine and cool temperatures. Chilean Chardonnays are defined by bold fruit, refreshing acidity and a sharply delineated minerality.

MONTES LIMITED SELECTION CHARDONNAY 2023 DO Aconcagua Costa Cool ocean breezes encourage a long, slow ripening period for the grapes in Aconcagua Costa, allowing Chardonnay to develop notably intense, forward tropical flavours without sacrificing balance or freshness. They also exhibit a refined saline character to their minerality. Full-bodied & Rich 44281 (XD) 750 ml $17.95 2 New at Vintages

Autumn in Valle del Maipo.

SANTA ALICIA GRAN RESERVA DE LOS ANDES CHARDONNAY 2024 Valle del Maipo This wine is sourced from the rocky colluvial soils of the foothills of the Andes. These soils are excellent for winemaking, as they force the vines’ roots to work harder and dig deeper to secure nutrients and water, resulting in smaller than typical berries with highly concentrated flavours. Full-bodied & Rich 406991 (XD) 750 ml $18.95 2 New at Vintages

CARMENÈRE Carmenère was initially misidentified as Merlot when both were first introduced to Chile from France in the 1850s. Coastal sites encourage structured, spicy, fresh examples, while warmer central plantings render luscious wines with rich black fruit. Carmenère from the foothills of the Andes reveals complex savoury and smoky characteristics.

CLOS DE LUZ MASSAL 1945 CARMENÈRE 2023 DO Valle de Cachapoal This wine comes from ungrafted vines planted in 1945. Heritage vineyard origins, yes, yet the wine reflects a truly modern style of Carmenère, showcasing freshness and ripeness alongside an unapologetically savoury herbal complexity. 94 points (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl) Full-bodied & Smooth 11861 (XD) 750 ml $24.95 2

ENCIERRA PUQUILLAY CARMENÈRE 2022 Valle de Colchagua As Maipo is to Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua is to Carmenère. Though household names like Montes and Lapostolle may lead the way, the quality found across the region has raised Carmenère from near obscurity as an occasional blending wine to a world-class single-varietal expression. 91 points (Claire Nesbitt, jamessuckling.com) Medium-bodied & Fruity 44679 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 2 New at Vintages

SYRAH Over the last decade or so, Chile’s finessed, ageable Syrahs have elbowed their way onto the world stage. These wines showcase a more structured style with more intense tannins than the grape reveals in other places. Those from coastal regions are also breath takingly elegant with striking balance and vibrancy.

SAN PEDRO 1865 SELECTED VINEYARDS 2026 YEAR OF THE HORSE

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2023 DO Valle del Maipo, Las Piedras

Though winemaking in the historic Maipo Valley began in the 1540s, it wasn’t until the 1850s that French varieties were introduced. Maipo is home to the oldest Cabernet Sauvi gnon plantings in Chile and produces many of the country’s most celebrated expressions. 92 points (Tim Atkin, MW, timatkin.com) Full-bodied & Firm 37911 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 3 Featured as our Wine of the Month Though not as famous as the neighbouring Maipo Valley, Cachapoal Valley has established a reputation for bold reds, particularly Car menère and Cabernet Sauvignon. LEANING POST CUVÉE WINONA 2022 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario “This is about big, bold and beautiful flavours. A lot of red fruit on the nose but it’s all black fruit on the palate – blackberry, mulberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla. This is perfect with roast or anything from the barbecue, like fennel sausages. It’s delicious.” Nadia Senchuk Medium-bodied & Fruity 32020 (XD) 750 ml $28.95 2

In the years since husband-and-wife team Ilya and Nadia Senchuk started Leaning Post in 2011, the winery has grown to become a respected, award-winning Niagara producer. Becoming Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario certified in 2022 for both the winery and vineyard was a natural step in their quest to craft minimal-intervention wines. “We’re trying to do everything that we possibly can to be proper environmental stewards,” says co-owner Nadia Senchuk. “We don’t worry about Instagram-worthy vineyards. We’re mechanically weeding, so it’s not perfect. We’re not using any herbicides. Weeds are good! It promotes biodiversity, and it makes better wine.” Other environmental initiatives include reusing and recycling packaging and installing solar panels in 2025. Another cause close to the Senchuks’ hearts is Ukraine. “My husband and I are both of Ukrainian-Canadian origin,” says Senchuk. “At the start of the war, we were a collection centre for medical supplies, warm coats, diapers. Our entire patio was filled to the rafters with donations.” Their logistical know-how allowed them to get supplies to where they were most needed. Senchuk estimates that, to date, Leaning Post has donated $35,000 to the Canada-Ukraine foundation; a charity that supports Ukranians living through war in their home country and those who have found refuge in Canada. Speaking of Canada, Leaning Post are leaning into the “buy Canadian” movement. “I’ve personally visited 170 LCBO stores to do promotion of local wines,” says Senchuk. Buying local is, of course, an important way to keep money and jobs in Canada, but there’s also an environmental benefit, as local wines will have a far lower carbon footprint due to shorter shipping distances. “A focus on local wine is one of the best environmental decisions that you can make,” says Senchuk. Especially when that local winery is certified sustainable.

LEANING POST THE FIFTY CHARDONNAY 2023 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario “This wine is fermented in concrete to build richness and texture. I want it to feel like an oaked Chardonnay but taste like an unoaked, with that green apple, pear and salinity. This is Chablis, but this is Ontario, and it’s something we’re really really proud of. Great pairings for this are poultry or creamy pastas. It’s beautiful with vegetarian dishes or seafood. So so so good.” Nadia Senchuk Light & Crisp 578864 (XD) 750 ml $26.95 1
