A lively, succulent and composed Chianti Classico showing aromas of forest berries, dried flowers, thyme and warm spices with some dry clay. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. This is an ambitious style for a Valpolicella, with complexity from layered cherries, bay leaves and dried mushrooms. There is no obvious pepperiness and the palate is light-bodied and fresh, sustained by refined ripe tannins that are chalkier in the finish. Drink now. Some are calling Brunello’s five-star 2020 vintage a “restaurant vintage” because the wines are so drinkable out of the gate. Quercecchio ages this wine in a combination of French and Slavonian oak, imparting a supple, lithe mouthfeel alongside the grippy tannins, high-toned fruit and floral tones, and cherry, plum, earth, leather, savoury herbs and oak. VECCHIA CANTINA RISERVA VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO 2017 DOCG, sustainable This 2017 saw two years in Slavonian oak casks and a further six months in bottle, allowing the flavours to become fully integrated and giving the wine’s considerable tannins time to soften, though they still provide excellent structure. Showing generous dark and red fruit, savoury herbs, smoke, spice, and a hint of tobacco, this wine is drinking beautifully.
