A BRAND NEW HOME
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month , Vintages is releasing these two wines from Wending Home: a 50-acre Niagara estate co-owned by Ying Feng, who came to Canada from Guangzhou, China, with her family six years ago. Feng, who runs the vineyard with her husband, Jianneng Li, partnered with veteran local winemaker Ron Giesbrecht, whom she met while studying viticulture at Niagara College, where he was a professor. As the name implies, the award-winning winery takes an unhurried path to crafting their terroir- focused wines; the added meaning of “wen ding” in Cantonese, represented on their logo, is “to aspire to be the best.”

STRATUS CABERNET FRANC 2021 6 VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, sustainable, vegan “Cabernet Franc is Ontario’s Bordeaux red. It’s very suited to our climate. Regardless of the vintage, it will typically survive winters and produce a high-quality wine. This has that nice yin-yang between berry fruit and an herbaceous edge. It’s a little bit spicy, with flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, and pink peppercorn. It’s great with barbecue, steaks, stews and lamb.” (Suzanne Janke) 89 points ( Wine Enthusiast ) Medium-bodied & Fruity 412759 (XD) 750 mL $45.20 2
Stratus is celebrated for being the world’s first fully LEED-certified winery. But did you know that when Stratus’s state-of-the-art winery building opened in 2005, it was the first LEED-certified building in Canada? “It’s a great foundation, literally and figuratively,” says estate director Suzanne Janke. But it was just the beginning. “Through our explorations of how we could improve our environmental footprint,” Janke continues, “we knew that transportation was the biggest thing that wasn’t in our total control.” The weight of glass bottles as they move from production to consumer has a big impact on carbon emissions. After an extensive search for a new bottle, Stratus found a winner, coming in at 370 grams. “Our previous bottle was 790,” says Janke. “We moved to lightweight glass in 2021 for our entire Stratus lineup.” Stratus estimates the switch has saved over 5 kg per case, or 35 metric tonnes of glass weight per vintage. We all like to believe the bottle we put in the recycling bin comes back as a new bottle but, as Janke points out, “that’s really not the case. It often ends up in sub-products like pavement. Glass is made from silica sand which is a non-renewable resource, and it’s in jeopardy. So the idea of every place on the planet continuing to produce glass for a single-use moment … It’s not sustainable.” Stratus is working with Kitchener company Circulr on a bottle reuse program and released their first wine in second-use bottles on Earth Day (April 22) 2024. Knowing their history, it’s not surprising to see them at the leading edge.
STRATUS WHITE 2022 6 VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, sustainable, vegan “This wine is sustainable because, as an assemblage, the components can really fluctuate based on the vintage and what Mother Nature gives us. It’s so aromatically delightful. On the palate, it’s fruity but lean and dry with beautiful layers of tangerine, melon, sometimes pineapple and mango. It’s very versatile with food – we call it a bit of a chameleon – and it’s very ageable.” (Suzanne Janke) 94 points (winesinniagara.com) Aromatic & Flavourful 660704 (XD) 750 mL $49.20 2

LOCAL TALENT LA BELLE COMTÉ French grapes and a climate that channels northern French regions give Prince Edward County wines a certain je ne sais quoi . Ontario’s wine scene is often compared with that of northern France. And when it comes to Prince Edward County, with its farm-to-table feel, cool climate, mineral-laden soils, and dedication to expressing terroir through Pinot Noir and other classic French varieties, the comparison seems particularly apt. These four wines show why the County is like a bit of France in our own backyard.

LOCAL TALENT
Domenic Di Pietrantonio. BOTTOM LEFT: Liquid gold at Huff Estates.
Closson Chase has been making fine wine in the County since 1998, with their first commercial vintage coming in 2004. The focus is on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which is hardly surprising given the calcareous soil atop a lime stone base (a hallmark of vineyards in Burgundy) of the winery’s own estate vineyards in Hillier Township. Following in the tradition of founding partner Deborah Paskus, winemaker Keith Tyers puts meticulous care into tending the vines all year to allow the fruit to express the character of the vineyard. The Churchside Pinot Noir comes from fruit sustainably grown in a single vineyard and is certified vegan.
Casa-Dea began growing wine grapes in the County in 2000 when Domenic Di Pietrantonio fulfilled his lifelong ambition by establishing a winery, which he named for his beloved wife, Dea. Now with over 65 acres of planted vines, the winery remains dedicated to expressing the best that the County has to offer through the lens of classic European grape varieties. Overseeing the entire winemaking process from grape to bottle, winemaker Kalvin Holland uses the Melon de Bourgogne variety of Loire Valley Muscadet fame to craft a vibrant, dynamic wine that tiptoes the tightrope between dry and off-dry.
Huff Estates celebrated its grand opening in 2004 and has been a leading light in the County’s wine scene ever since. The estate boasts its own sleekly sophisticated inn, cozy restaurant and patio, and of course the famed Oeno Gallery, where visitors can peruse fine art from internationally acclaimed painters, photographers and glass- workers. Burgundian-born winemaker Frédéric Picard crafts the Cuvée Janine Sparkling Rosé from 100% Pinot Noir, with the bubbles achieved in the tradi- tional method of Champagne, whereby a second fermentation occurs within the bottle. The wine is aged for 20 months on the lees for added depth.

Lighthall Vineyards has been dedicated to showing the potential of County character since first opening its doors in 2008. In addition to making wine, Lighthall is also one of the very few wineries in Canada to produce its own sheep-milk cheese on-site. While the milk is sourced from a single herd of prized ewes, the grapes are harvested by hand from Lighthall’s 60 acres of vineyards in the County’s southern South Bay peninsula. Winemaker Chris Thompson crafts the Pinot Gris using Alsatian yeast and matures 30% of the wine in neutral French oak barrels to bring extra richness and roundness.
