TIMELESS ICONS France is home to some of the world’s oldest and best-known wine regions. For centuries, France’s winemakers and the regions in which they work have defined what constitutes the very best in winemaking. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, Champagne, the Rhône, Provence, et al. are more than place names, they’re immediately and intimately associated with specific styles of quality wine developed through thousands of years of experimentation and experience. Saint-Émilion’s Château Haut-Simard is a Merlot-driven Right Bank Bordeaux known for delivering classic elegance and depth. Château La Nerthe has been a feature of Châteauneuf-du-Pape winemaking since 1590, and the 2022 offering is a powerful, structured wine that exhibits pinpoint old-vine complexity. Clarendelle has family ties to Bordeaux’s famed Château Haut-Brion. Their white wine, typically a classic blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, can in some vintages, such as the 2023 we have here, include a hint of orange blossom courtesy of a splash of Muscadelle.

SPARKLING STATEMENTS France perfected the traditional method; no surprise its sparklers are the crème de la crème . “Champagne” is a word that does a lot of work. It’s one of the world’s most recognized wine styles, but the term also describes a wine, a region and a production method. Legend has credited Dom Pérignon, a 17th-century Benedictine monk, with perfecting the method by which CO 2 adds sparkle to a still wine. This is done via the triggering of a second fermentation within each bottle through the addition of a small amount of wine, sugar and yeast ( liqueur de tirage ).

DRAPPIER ZERO DOSAGE BRUT NATURE PINOT NOIR CHAMPAGNE AOC (André et Michel Drappier) Pinot Noir grown in the limestone plateau of the Côte des Bar is the source for this dry Champagne. While it certainly is dry, it is also a rich wine with a pink grapefruit aroma and taut, mineral texture. The wine will soften as it matures, so drink this bottling from 2025. Score: 91 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast , Dec. 31, 2024) Rich & Complex 179275 (XD) 750 ml $74.95 2

Joseph Cattin’s rooftop patio boasts views of the vineyards, the Black Forest and the Alps.

“Crémant” is the term used in select regions of France outside of Champagne to indicate sparklers that have been crafted using the same rigorous process. The Joseph Cattin Brut Crémant d’Alsace featured here is a crisp, ripe example. France is also a leader in Charmat-method sparkling wines such as the vibrant, modern- styled Luc Belaire Bleu . Charmat wines gain their sparkle from a second fermentation in stainless steel tanks rather than the bottle. France’s sparkling wines come in at a wide range of prices, presenting limitless opportunities for dining and celebrations.

LUC BELAIRE LIMITED EDITION BLEU SPARKLING France The Bleu is the newest fizz from popular producer Luc Belaire. It blends Ugni Blanc and Colombard and offers suggestions of fresh berries and tropical fruit along with an elegant balance of roundness and delicacy. The handsome blue bottle was inspired by the waters of the Côte d’Azur, making it a feast for the eyes, too. A lovely choice for picnic nibbles or fruit salad. Medium-bodied & Flavourful 25281 (M) 750 ml $42.95 1 JOSEPH CATTIN BRUT CRÉMANT D’ALSACE AOC, Alsace, traditional method (Cattin Frères) A ripe, juicy sparkler with delicately and precisely defined apple, pear and yellow plum. There’s a shortbread undertone and some tropical, honeyed notes on the fringes. Medium-bodied & Flavourful 281329 (D) 750 ml $21.95 1

TERROIR-DRIVEN DISCOVERIES France is a rock star when it comes to treasures that beautifully express their origins. The choice of which grapes should be grown where and what styles produced in the individual wine regions of France is the result of experimentation and ongoing refinement that dates back thousands of years. Whether it’s the freshness and balance introduced to the Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Chardonnay by the limestone of Burgundy; the structure afforded the Merlot-driven Domaine du Grand Ormeau by Lalande de Pomerol’s high concentration of gravel; or the ripeness, flair and charm that the rocky vineyards of the southern Rhône give to the J.L. Chave Mon Coeur Côtes du Rhône , the wines of France gain their distinct personalities from the character of their soils.

Jean-Louis Chave in his cellars.

J.L. CHAVE SÉLECTION MON COEUR CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2023 AOC, Rhône Juicy red berries, herbes de Provence, pepper, and a hint of sandalwood lift from the 2023 Côtes Du Rhône Mon Coeur. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced, with savory tannins and tons of personality and charm, it’s perfect for drinking over the coming 4-6 years. Drink 2025-2031. Score: 90 (jebdunnuck.com, May 9, 2025) Full-bodied & Smooth 995548 (XD) 750 ml $27.95 2

ROUX PÈRE & FILS BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2022 AOC, Burgundy

This structured Bourgogne-level Pinot Noir comprises grapes sourced from vineyards that abut several prestigious cru sites. It has food-friendly acidity and mixed fruit, including strawberry, cherry and blackcurrant, plus touches of black pepper and underbrush. It will make a classy addition to casual mid-week dining. Medium-bodied & Fruity 45174 (XD) 750 ml $35.95 2 New at Vintages

Ripe, fleshy and golden chardonnay for Maison de Bellene’s 2023, apropos of the season as a gift to all. So ripe in fact you get the apple notes throughout, from blossom to yellow fruit crunch while freshness is caught at peak. DOMAINE DU GRAND ORMEAU 2020 AOC Lalande de Pomerol, Bordeaux, sustainable I am a fan of the merlots from Lalande-de Pomerol as they always over-deliver for the price. This is a classic with ripe black fruit nestled amid fine oak cedary spice, fresh but subtle herbs. It is medium-full bodied, more dense than I expected with some warmth and firm tannin. EVERYDAY ELEGANCE Famous for the finest wines, France also offers endless easy to-enjoy, great-value options.

France’s reputation for premium-quality wine has resulted in the widespread misapprehension that French wine must mean expensive wine for cellaring or serving only on special occasions. However, while the very finest, collectable wines carry hefty price tags, the majority of French wine is approachably priced and meant for everyday enjoyment. Mouton Cadet Cuvée Héritage , a modern-styled Bordeaux blend with classic appeal, deliciously demonstrates the point.

ROSÉ EVERY WAY

France has 2,500 years of practice perfecting pink wine into styles from luxurious to light and lively.

Provence is one of the most evocative place names in the world, immediately conjuring images of vast fields of lavender, picturesque villages, colourful hills, stunning ocean vistas and, of course, rosé wines. Tasty, refreshing, and brilliantly versatile with food, rosés reflect aspects of both red and white wines, and Provence has been making them for over 2,500 years. Rosé wines are made all over France (and the world) including Champagne, where wines such as Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Rosé , which is a luxurious, vintage-dated rosé Champagne, celebrate rosé’s versatility and popularity. Dry, delicately fruity, and showcasing a refined minerality, Le Bijou de Sophie Valrose Rosé is a beautifully pale-coloured, Provence- style rosé made with a modern sensibility.

LE BIJOU DE SOPHIE VALROSE ROSÉ 2024 IGP Coteaux de Béziers, Languedoc

Intense aromas of baseball card bubblegum, apricot blossoms and ripe watermelon make for an attention-grabbing nose on this rosé. RADFORD DALE VINUM CHENIN BLANC 2023 WO Stellenbosch, vegan Grapes from the same Lynedoch vineyard planted in 1969 that supplies Radford Dale’s top-end Renaissance bottling. 40% matured in foudre, the rest in a combination of 228-, 300- and 500-litre barrels. Citrus, peach and just the right amount of leesy, waxy complexity on the nose. Great fruit concentration, punchy acidity and pithy, slightly bitter finish. Old-vine Chenin treated with the lightest of hands to great effect. Score: 94 (Christian Eedes, winemag.co.za, Sept. 17, 2024) Full-bodied & Rich 13338 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 2

When Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa on April 27, 1994, it marked a new chapter for both the nation and for Alex Dale. Inspired, he handed in his resignation at a Burgundy winery and made plans to move to the new “rainbow nation.” There, in 1998, he started Radford Dale with his friend Ben Radford. After many years of organic practices, Radford Dale received Ecocert organic accreditation in 2020 and opened an all-organic estate in Elgin the following year. From there, they helped found Organic Wines South Africa in September 2024: an association of estab lished certified-organic South African wine estates. Radford Dale has long been part of the IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) environmental sustainability program, and all their wines have the Wine Certification Authority’s Integrity & Sustainability seal. Some of their more exciting initiatives include using ducks in the vineyard to remove snails instead of employing insecticide and installing solar energy at their organic cellar in mid-2024, taking it 100% off grid. Recognizing the vital importance of education, Radford Dale created the Land of Hope Educational Trust in 2007. This trust is available to previously disadvantaged individuals (a South African term that encompasses men of racialized descent, women, and people with a disability) employed at Radford Dale, as well as their children and dependents. The trust has grown from supporting five children in 2008 with a total education fund of 15,883 rand to supporting 12 children in 2022 with a fund of 807,555 rand. The fund gives these children access to high-quality education that would otherwise be out of reach for their families.

TWO SISTERS UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2021 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula

Making Ontario chardonnay without any aging time in barrel suggests a Chablis AOC stylistic and for the most part that is true. The difference for Two Sisters is two-fold; one is the warm Niagara River sub-app and the second but clearly most important is the 1959 planted chardonnay vineyard, generally accepted as Canada’s oldest ... The freshness and spirit here are exceptional and this wine should be famous, not merely almost and the time has come for more consumers to know it by name ... Drink 2024-2028. Tasted May 2024. LEANING POST PINOT NOIR 2023 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula ... What’s right and charming about 2023 is how it settles into our varietal psyche for a vintage neither as warm or concentred, while returning to varietal basics ... wines ripe and structured enough that in Ilya Senchuk’s hands are able to please early yet surely age gracefully forward several years. There is purity and potential magic from vintages like this with no exception for one labeled as an LP pinot noir. Less than epic, but they can’t all be and my how good ’23 will be for years to come.
