DEALCOHOLIZED WINE RED WINE MASSO ANTICO ZERO ALCOHOL ROSSO Puglia, Italy

OKUNOMATSU ADATARA GINJO SAKE Fukushima, Japan Aromatic and pretty, with suggestions of honeysuckle and jasmine on the nose and peach, ripe pear and melon on the palate. Fresh and beautifully balanced, with a silky, creamy mouthfeel. 646125 (M) 720 ml $29.95 1

Made from 100% Primitivo (Zinfandel), this red was macerated for 10 days on the grape skins during vinification and then dealcoholized using membrane tech: the wine passes through selec tive membranes that gently separate water and alcohol, preserving structure and aromas. This sweet-edged, fruity wine has notes of strawberry and cherry and will pair with arrabbiata pasta, or barbecued meats served with spicy gremolata. VERMOUTH

GUERRA ROJO RED VERMOUTH Spain

[Though not the same bottling as reviewed, this will reflect similar attributes.] Based in Bierzo, Guerra produced this Vermouth from 1879 until the 1960s, and has now resurrected and relaunched the product from a century-old recipe. It’s blended from local grapes, red Mencia and white Godello, and shows a profile that sits stylistically between classic vermouth and amaro (bitters), with a strong artichoke-like flavour on the palate, mixed with more vermouth-like cinnamon and other Christmas cake spices. Despite the sugar clearly in the mix, the finish comes across as rather dry and tonic thanks to that strong (and pleasant) bitter stream of flavour running from start to finish. Great complexity overall. I can see this starring in both pre-dinner cocktails, as well as solo on ice, or even after dinner neat as a gentle, low alcohol digestif. Score: 91 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, May 2021) Sweet 542852 (S) 750 ml $22.95 1 KONZELMANN VIDAL ICEWINE 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario Konzelmann has been making wine in Niagara since the 1980s, and Icewine is one of its specialties. This one is decadent and sweet but still lively and bright, without a hint of cloying. It shows apple, pineapple, honey, mango and apricot, with a long finish. Sip with apple pie and vanilla ice cream, or savoury pastries with trušle butter. Lusciously Sweet 476192 (S) 375 ml $39.95 2 Featured in We’re All In on Ontario ICEWINE
