VINTAGES

Summertime at Hidden Bench.

ONTARIO’S TOP FIVE Ontario wineries produce a wide range of varieties and styles, but there are five standouts that have secured Niagara’s place among the great cool-climate wine regions of the world. These are what set us apart. Here’s what our buying team has to say about Ontario’s top five:

4 VINTAGES

Riesling • Authentic

• Precise • Electric

Riesling is a versatile, dynamic grape that can produce everything from bone-dry to sparkling to sweet wines. It reveals terroir with an authenticity and accuracy that few grapes can match and is famously food-friendly. Riesling can pair with almost any thing. I enjoy Niagara Riesling all year round but especially in the spring and summer, and it’s my go-to for Chinese and Indian takeout.”

Sean Adams Product Manager, New World & Ontario Wines

HIDDEN BENCH RIESLING 6 VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment Hidden Bench’s non-interventionist approach and use of natural yeasts place fruit purity and clear expression of place first and foremost. Aromatic & Flavourful 183491 (D) 750 ml $26.95 2 4 Organic product

VINTAGES

Chardonnay

• World-class • Cool-climate

Thomas Bachelder, co-owner and head winemaker at Bachelder.

Ontario Chardonnay is one of my trusted wines when I’m planning a meal. Ontario’s cool climate helps create wines with bright acidity and fresh avours of apple, pear and citrus, while some styles o er added richness and texture from oak ageing. I enjoy pairing local Chardonnay with perch, roast chicken, creamy pastas, or Ontario cheeses. What I appreciate most is its versatility. It works just as well at home for a casual weeknight dinner as it does around a table shared with family and friends. It’s also a great example of the quality and diversity of Ontario winemaking.”

Peter Cloutier Senior Category Manager, New World & Ontario Wines

REIF RESERVE CHARDONNAY 6 VQA Niagara River, Niagara-on-the-Lake This wine is sourced from Reif’s oldest Chardonnay block, planted in 1981. It’s juicy, elegant and rich, with apple, pear, hazelnut and vanilla. Full-bodied & Rich 728022 (XD) 750 ml $24.95 2

6 VINTAGES

Pinot Noir

• Refined • Elegant • Ethereal

Known to the world as the ‘heartbreak grape’ because it’s notoriously di cult to grow, Pinot Noir ourishes in Ontario’s cool climate, producing many world-class wines. When I was taking my rst wine classes, adjectives such as ‘alluring,’ ‘sensual’ and ‘seductive’ were used in addition to the main aromas of cherry, strawberry and violets one could expect from this variety. After tasting many Pinots within my budget from other countries, it was an Ontario VQA Pinot Noir that gave me my ‘aha moment,’ and I nally understood what Pinot Noir at its nest can be.”

Sean Adams Product Manager, New World & Ontario Wines

BACHELDER LES VILLAGES BENCH PINOT NOIR 6 VQA Niagara Escarpment An alluring, perfumed Pinot Noir from Niagara’s master of terroir, Thomas Bachelder. This lifted, precise wine has the potential to age into the early 2030s. 91 points (Sara d’Amato, winealign.com) Medium-bodied & Fruity 11582 (XD) 750 ml $34.95 2

FOR COMPLETE TASTING NOTES, SEE PAGE 34.

VINTAGES

Cabernet Franc

• Ripe • Fresh • Savoury

Ontario Cabernet Franc e ortlessly ts relaxed dinners at home or gatherings with friends. Ontario’s cool climate helps create wines with fresh red fruit avours like raspberry and cherry, along with a touch of spice that makes every glass interesting. Only a handful of places in the world can produce 100% varietal Cabernet Franc (generally, it’s used as a blending grape), and Ontario makes some of the nest. I enjoy pairing it with grilled meats, mushroom-based dishes or a classic charcuterie board, but it’s also very enjoyable on its own.”

Peter Cloutier Senior Category Manager, New World & Ontario Wines

FIELDING CABERNET FRANC 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula

Structured and ripe, with upfront raspberry, smoky crushed berry, and evocative savoury herbs. Fielding’s quality focus produces a refined, consistent expression of Niagara Cabernet Franc. 90 points (National Wine Awards of Canada) Medium-bodied & Fruity 36194 (XD) 750 ml $26.15 2

Stemless Wine Glasses, set of 2 (46562, $9.95)

Icewine • World-renowned

Icewine is Canada’s gift to the world. Though it’s made elsewhere, we’re the only place that can produce it every year without fail. This gorgeous dessert wine is lusciously sweet but not cloying and can be enjoyed in many ways. Of course, the obvious is as an after-dinner treat, but it can also be used in cocktails, as a dessert topping, or even in cooking!” Sean Adams Product Manager, New World & Ontario Wines

KONZELMANN VIDAL ICEWINE 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula

Konzelmann has been making wine in Niagara since the 1980s, and Icewine is one of its specialties. A decadent, balanced, dynamic wine with notes of honey, pineapple, mango and apricot. Lusciously Sweet 476192 (S) 375 ml $39.95 2

Konzelmann winemaker Shantal Silverthorne.

Celebrating years 25

Tawse proprietor Moray Tawse.

APPLAUSE FOR TAWSE For 25 years, Tawse Winery has been a pioneering voice in Niagara. Through terroir-driven wines created with a focus on organic and biodynamic winemaking, Tawse Winery has helped set the standard that has made Ontario a world-renowned cool-climate wine region.

14 VINTAGES

When Moray Tawse began his Niagara wine project in 2001, he was convinced that Niagara was worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as the world’s great cool-climate regions. This belief was born of extensive travel and tasting, particu larly in Burgundy, where he developed a finely tuned understanding of what impact carefully crafted wines that faithfully reflect the place where they are grown can have. Over the years, Tawse Winery has developed one of Niagara’s most diverse portfolios of premium cool-climate wines, with a focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Gamay.

TAWSE GROWERS BLEND CABERNET FRANC 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula Tawse Winery has long been a local champion of premium Cab Franc, and this wine consistently o‡ers serious value. It’s a blend of hand-harvested fruit grown in sustainably farmed vineyards across the Niagara Peninsula.

VINTAGES

Jessica Otting, Tawse winemaker (left) with teammates. ABOVE: The tasting room at Tawse.

One of the pillars of the Tawse Winery approach has been their dedication to organic winemaking; a key factor in the unquestionable authenticity of their terroir-driven wines. Tawse Winery’s decision to highlight the special qualities of individual vineyard sites rather than creating blends comprising various sites and regions was quite rare in Ontario in the early 2000s. Many of these sites are now considered benchmarks in Niagara and include such notables as Robyn’s Block, planted with Chardonnay in 1984; Carly’s Block, thought to have been first planted with Riesling around 1976/1977; and Quarry Road Vineyard, planted in 1998. The future has always been a living part of the Tawse ethos. Sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming are not approaches one adopts if one is rooted in the moment. These are philosophical attitudes that celebrate the vintage at hand and are promises made to vintages to come.

TAWSE SPARK LIMESTONE RIDGE SPARKLING RIESLING 6 VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment, traditional method An elegant single-vineyard, traditional method sparkler that oŽers excellent value. VINTAGES

Tawse opened Redstone Winery in 2015. This winery puts an increased emphasis on the experience for the visitor, with a focus on food and hospitality that invites deeper connec tion to the amazing Niagara region and the Escarpment in particular. As Tawse Winery celebrates 25 years, there’s no trace of complacency in its approach. This leading light of Niagara winemaking is shining brighter than ever. In recognition of this quarter-century milestone, select bottlings will feature updated labels that will roll out gradually throughout 2026 as new vintages are released. These refreshed labels carry a new design nodding to the journey Tawse Winery has taken while casting a confident eye towards the future. Tawse Winery was named Canadian Winery of the Year at the 2026 National Wine Awards of Canada, which is Canada’s most prestigious, comprehensive wine competition. This is the fifth time Tawse has been awarded this distinguished honour.

HOKUSHIKA KITAAKITA JUNMAI DAIGINJO SAKE Akita, Japan

Here’s a cool fact: Hokushika, who have been making fine sake since 1944, store their sake under the snow on the shores of Lake Towada. They were inspired by the tradition of burying vegetables in snow to keep them fresh over the winter. The practice works for sake too, keeping it fresh, mild and smooth. This daiginjo is full bodied, robust, plush, elegant and opulent, with delicate floral and fruity tones. 42265 (M) 720 ml $44.95 1

GUERRA ROJO RED VERMOUTH Spain

[Though not the same bottling as reviewed, this will reflect similar attributes.] Based in Bierzo, Guerra produced this Vermouth from 1879 until the 1960s, and has now resurrected and relaunched the product from a century-old recipe. It’s blended from local grapes, red Mencia and white Godello, and shows a profile that sits stylistically between classic vermouth and amaro (bitters), with a strong artichoke-like flavour on the palate, mixed with more vermouth-like cinnamon and other Christmas cake spices. Despite the sugar clearly in the mix, the finish comes across as rather dry and tonic thanks to that strong (and pleasant) bitter stream of flavour running from start to finish. Great complexity overall. I can see this starring in both pre-dinner cocktails, as well as solo on ice, or even after dinner neat as a gentle, low alcohol digestif. This is a good wine, and it’s good value. It’s a spicy, medium-weight style ... with bell pepper and black pepper characters wedded to cherry plum fruit.
