HENRY OF PELHAM SPECK FAMILY RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2024 6 VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment This wine is sourced from Henry of Pelham’s oldest vineyards, which date back more than a quarter century. It’s an intense, powerful Pinot, with bright acidity bringing lift to a core of earthy, smoky dark fruit. Pair with roast chicken or mushroom risotto.

This wine is fermented in stainless steel, with a small portion undergoing arrested fermentation (which halts fermentation and keeps a dash of residual sugar) while the rest is fermented dry. The blended wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel for eight months. The result is a juicy, bright, fresh wine with apple, grapefruit, pear, citrus and notable Twenty Mile minerality. The 2021 vintage was challenging in Niagara, resulting in reduced yields and demanding extra-detailed attention in the vineyard and during selection. Kacaba’s Merlot 2021 demonstrates the fine quality such determined effort produces. It’s perfumed, plush and smooth, with a great depth of raspberry, plum and blackberry fruit alongside dried fruit, garden herbs and cinnamon, with cocoa and wood on the close. Drink through 2028+.

LEANING POST GAMAY 2024 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, unfiltered

This wine is a blend of NOTL fruit with the debut vintage of Gamay from the cool Lincoln Lakeshore Senchuk Vineyard. It shows ripe blackberry, cherry, evocative earth, spice and herbs. The warm growing season created some extra weight in the mouth, but the acidity and balance are so finely accomplished there’s no loss of typicity or poise.
