Legend has it that in the Middle Ages, there was a sweet white wine called Malvasia that was known throughout the world. It was named after Monemvasia; a Byzantine town in southern Greece whose castle port served as anchorage and supply centre for ships passing through. In the 16th century, during the Ottoman rule, Monemvasia’s vineyards were destroyed, leaving only stone wine presses and 900-year-old historical references to bear witness to Malvasia’s rule there. Five hundred years later, Giorgos and Elli Tsimbidi spearheaded an e ort to bring Malvasia back to Monemvasia. On July 23, 2010, on the anniversary of Monemvasia’s liberation from the Ottomans and after an e ort of 12 years, Monemvasia-Malvasia received its Protected Designation of Origin. Finally, in 2013, Tsimbidi’s Monemvasia-Malvasia was bottled for the first time. This labour of love is par for the course for Tsimbidi Monemvasia. Since 1997, they’ve been making wines in their 30 hectares of organic vineyards from rare varieties local to Monemvasia. The same felicitous geography and Mediterranean climate that helped make Malvasia so sought-after are still the area’s secrets to its success. The brisk winds, plentiful sunshine, mild winters, dry summers, and soils poor in organic matter are ideal for making low-intervention wines, especially when you’re focused on grapes that grew up under these conditions. The nearby Myrtoan Sea has a significant e ect on the vines, regulating temperatures and giving rise to the meltemia winds that blow in from the northeast in August, cooling the vineyards. Vines are planted in rows to achieve greater aeration, yields are kept low, and all viticultural tasks are done by hand. Today, Giorgos and Elli’s daughters Marialena and Anastasia have joined the family business. Whether it be returning the rare local Kydonitsa variety to the light, advancing Assyrtiko’s ascent, or letting the world know about the rising-star Limniona grape, the Tsimbidis are doing legendary work for their beloved Monemvasia. Any wine they make will have a story to tell.

Is it a coincidence that the ancient Spartans came from a part of Greece that produces the uncompromising Kydonitsa? ... a white wine that benefits from decanting, to allow its tightly coiled, concentrated flavours of quince, citrus pith, artichoke and wax to emerge.
