PINK PROTOTYPE The origin story of fine rosé is rooted in Provence. The Greeks planted vines in this sunny Mediterranean region of southern France 2,600 years ago, and the pink wines they made there from lightly macerated red wine grapes formed the playbook for modern rosé. Whereas some pink wines are considered simply a by-product of red wine production and treated like an afterthought, in Provence, rosé has always been the star of the show. Lovingly crafted with the best juice from the vineyard’s finest grapes, Provençal rosés exhibit an elegance and sophistication to which pink wines from around the globe aspire.

LOCAL TALENT

Domaine Queylus crafted their 2025 rosé from 100% Cabernet Franc, which they picked early to optimize bright natural acidity in a warm vintage. The berries were direct-pressed whole in the classic Provence style, and vinification took place in stainless steel without malolactic conversion. Each of these choices was made to maximize freshness, elegance, expressiveness and vibrancy. The resulting wine is lip-smackingly dry and bursting with white flowers, citrus peel and wild strawberry, with a lovely mineral undertone.

Stratus also made a 2025 rosé entirely from Cabernet Franc, but with a twist: theirs was vinified partly in the whole-berry direct-press method and partly in a “saignée” style, with the berries given eight hours of skin contact. The unique production method created a wine with enhanced intensity and depth of colour, while retaining elegance and vibrancy. The finished wine delivers fresh flowers, juicy berry fruit, crunchy bell pepper and subtle spice.

Fielding used a blend of Gamay (78%) and Pinot Noir (22%) for their 2025 rosé. Each grape variety was picked with peak crispness and freshness in mind, and the wine was vinified in stainless steel with a short period of skin contact before press ing. After blending and bottling, the wine is bright, crisp and elegant, with lively notions of raspberry, strawberry, citrus and tangerine.

Medium-bodied & Dry 43598 (XD) 750 ml $32.20 1

Wending Home created their 2024 rosé using a blend of red wine and white wine grapes; namely, Pinot Noir (53%) and Pinot Gris (47%). The temperate vintage allowed the fruit plenty of time to develop on the vine while retaining bright natural acidity. During vinification, the Pinot Noir had only brief skin contact while the Pinot Gris was given longer, enhancing depth and intensity. The wine then spent eight months on the yeast lees, which imparted additional complexity and texture. In the glass, the wine is showing beautifully, with suggestions of ripe berry fruit and zesty citrus.
