RUBY GEM ROCK CELLAR GAMAY NOIR 2024 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario 50371 (XD) 750 ml $19.95 JADE RIESLING 2024 6 VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario 42484 (M) 750 ml $24.95
Kevin Qin joined Featherstone in 2014 following his graduation from Niagara College’s winery and viticulture program. He has increasingly played a critical role in shaping the Featherstone style, where he’s now both vineyard manager and head winemaker. He also crafts wines under his own label; wines that celebrate his Asian heritage. Jade can symbolize nobility, purity and longevity, all attributes found in Jade Riesling 2024. And the colour ruby, as in Ruby Gem Rock Cellar Gamay Noir 2024, can signify love and passion; two undeniable features of Kevin Qin’s winemaking career. May is Asian Heritage Month , and Vintages has two tasty local wines to help you celebrate.

Sustainable Winegrowing Australia is a voluntary national program that allows grape-growers and winemakers to demonstrate and continually improve their sustainability credentials. The program has proven quite popular, with more than 70% of Australia’s vineyard area covered by membership as of June 2025, and 73% of those members having achieved the certification required to display a Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Certified trust mark. “Australian winemakers and growers love to make excep tional wines while protecting Australia’s natural wonders for future generations to enjoy,” says Deirdre Cook, marketing manager at Wine Australia. Members measure, monitor and report on their carbon footprint and sustainable practices in six key areas: land and soil, waste, energy, water, biodiversity, people and business. They must undergo a third-party audit to qualify for the trust mark, with follow-up audits required every three years to maintain certification. “Sustainable Winegrowing Australia provides a framework to support sustainable practices and encourage continual improvement in practice change,” says Cook. “A certification is recognition of the hard work being done, and increasingly important for trade and consumers.” So the next time you spot the SWA trust mark on that bottle of Shiraz you’re eyeing, you can feel confident that it’s been made to the highest standard of care for both people and planet.

STRATUS CABERNET FRANC 2022 6 VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake, sustainable, vegan The ripeness of the vintage is easily evident in this very approachable cabernet franc. The colour is quite deep ruby. The nose is generous and flush with ripe raspberry/blackberry fruit, violets, light tobacco, barrel spice and vanillin. Almost a sense of licorice as well. It is medium-full bodied with modest, soft acidity and 14.3% alcohol warmth. But the fruit is so present that heat is cooled. Tannins are dusty/crusty but not green. The length is excellent. Approachable now and should please through 2030 and perhaps beyond. Tasted February 2026. Score: 92 (David Lawrason, winealign.com)
