Due to its strategic geographical position, Sardinia was ruled by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabians, Aragonese, Genovese and Pisans before joining Italy in 1726. Similarly, Sicily was variously ruled by the Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Arabians, Spanish, Aragonese and Hohenstaufen before unifying with Italy in 1861. These myriad influences are still felt today in Sardinian and Sicilian architecture, cuisine and culture.

Sardinia is home to 15 distinct wine regions. The majority of these are situated on the western side of the island, where the topography and soils support high-quality wine production. The island’s signature red grape is Cannonau (Grenache), which is used throughout the island to make rich, fruit-forward wines. Carignano (Carignan) is the headliner of bold, intense wines from the windswept sands of the southwestern Sardinian appellation of Carignano del Sulcis. The island’s signature white grape is Vermentino, which is known for its bright acidity and zesty fruit character.

Sicily cultivates over 65 indigenous grape varieties along with several international ones. NOVA SCOTIA
All of Nova Scotia’s vineyards fall within 20 kilometres of the Atlantic Ocean, and this proximity plays a huge role in determining what grapes can be grown here and in defining the character of the wines made. The cold, volatile weather has seen Nova Scotia’s winemakers focus on cool-climate grapes such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as a number of winter-hardy hybrids like L’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Lucie Kuhlmann and New York Muscat, which form the backbone of this region’s aromatic, fresh, characterful white wines. The extreme cool-climate conditions are ideal for premium sparkling wines, which require high levels of natural acidity.

CVNE has been run by the same family for five genera tions and is an industry leader in Spain, operating eight wineries spread among Spain’s principal growing regions. One might suspect that the adjustments required to adapt to climate change and pursue sustainable viticulture would be diicult for such an established organization, but David Piera, export area manager at CVNE, insists that the opposite is the case. “It’s part of our culture,” says Piera. “It’s a natural way of evolving for this family, in its fifth generation, as they’ve always been working towards quality. When you work with quality products, the most important thing is the raw materials: the grapes, and the way you treat your vineyards and your soils.” In 2024, CVNE became the first Rioja winery to achieve gold member status at International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA). This internationally recognized organization audits member wineries annually to ensure that they are consistently reducing carbon emissions in line with the United Nations Race to Zero Campaign, with the ultimate goal of net zero emissions by 2050. CVNE also achieved gold in 2025 and is on track for 2026. The sustainability measures that got them here include lighter-weight bottles, recycled-cardboard packaging, and the installation of biomass boilers at several of their wineries. These boilers replace fossil fuel consumption with energy produced from forest waste and, alongside the installation of solar panels, mean that 35.97% of all CVNE’s energy comes from onsite renewable sources. It’s all about building on the CVNE legacy. “This wine group has had 150 years of history,” says Piera, “and we expect another 150. We are doing this because we couldn’t do it any other way.”

LAKEVIEW CABERNET SAUVIGNON 6 VQA Niagara Peninsula
... Winemaker and French-native Jean-Pierre Colas “gets” Cabernet Franc in this style, and I think the 2023 vintage that was just recently released is their best yet. This is a plush, juicy, Loire-inspired Cabernet Franc. Classic, fruit forward with just the right amount of soft herbal undertones (basil, tarragon) peeking through the fleshy berried fruits. Delicately spiced on the palate, it is lively, approachable, with velvety tannins, with superb concentration and length at this price point. This ticks all the boxes for me.
